Z Series (Z3, Z4, Z8)General discussion and technical help for all year Z series cars.
My 99 Z3 2.8 (53k miles) looks like it's sagging at the right rear (drivers side as I'm in the UK - and yes, it's raining). When I got underneath to have a look, the coating has come off both rear springs, although they physically look ok. The shocks look ok too. My local 'BMW specialist' told me all BMW's sag at the rear So, need some advice!
Is the sag normal?
Could the springs be at fault?
Is it normal for the coating to crack off the springs?
The coating normally comes off with age. As far as the "sag" it's possible that the rear springs are getting tired/worn. I'ld compare it to other Zs in the same age/era before getting out the wallet. If you have a Bentley manual they usually have ride height specs in them you can reference.
Thanks again for the info, appreciated! The forum is great for those of us who don't have a lot of experience!
I have a BMW warranty on it, which was transferred to me by the previous owner when I bought the Z - it's booked in next week to have some things done so I'll ask them to change the springs too. Might as well use & abuse the warranty!
I'll try to find another Z & have a look. In your experience, can anything else cause the sagging?
^^^^^ I've noticed in my trunk, there is no escape lever, no light that glows in the trunk all the time, and its sound proofed so you don't hear lot from the trunk at all. (I've actually been in my trunk while the car is moving whoops!) Its built for use by the German Mafia to kill people.
