Powered by the current M3’s in-line six delivering 340 horsepower - the next generation of the 3-Series-based sports car will be motivated by a 400-hp V8 - the new M Roadster will make its official debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January. The 3.2-liter mill is good to propel the lighter (in comparison to the M3) Roadster from 0 to 62mph in five seconds flat. Also M3-sourced is the Roadster’s 6-speed manual transmission

Visual changes aren’t radical, being limited to the de rigueur bigger wheels and tires, revised “sporty” front an rear fascias and quad tailpipes on the back. Overall ride height has been lowered by 10mm.

Pricing information has not been released, but with sights set squarely on Porsche’s Boxster S, the latest member of the M family should start close to the $60k mark on the American market.
