Anyone ski?

I've never gone skiing before, so for my birthday I'm going to one of those beginner's packages. Well, actually next month because the season doesn't begin till Nov. They'll have everything I need, plus the lessons. Anyone have any advice for a newbie? Tips? Tricks?

I won't be at the lodge much, if that's what you mean? At least I'm hping not to be . . my friends cabin is about 5min away from the resort. So private lessons are the way to go, huh?

i definatly suggest private lesson, think of it like, a lecture hall VS a tutor. the lecture hall just tells you how to do it. the tutor tells you what your doing wrong and how to fix it.

as for the french fries and pizza. they are terms alot of instructors use. pizza is the wedge ( tips of ski's pointing inward) you use to slow down and turn. and french fries are straight out, you use to go faster.

after you get past pizza and french fries. you will get to "edge, and pressure" instructor can explain this better as he can give you a visual.

Heres what PIZZA and French Fry mean

Pizza: /\ way of slowing down. put the tips of your skis toghether and form a pizza shape and ittl slow u down

French Fry: || means ur going to go fast. Both ur skis are toghether so ur gonna be going to go fast, which is were pizza comes in.

Go with snowboarding, man it hurts when your learning but once you do it kicks ass. Plus if you fall you don't get all tangled up with poles and skis.

edit: ^^^^ no one can learn to ski in 5 minutes that would be like saying I learned how to ride a bike in 5 minutes.

Ha ha, now that I think about it, someone did tell me about pizza and ff many years ago

I get differing opinions on which is easier, snowboarding or skiing. I think I'm gonna try skiing first, and see how it goes. I see my friends coming home all bruised up all the time, but they say they had a blast. Just hope I come home in one piece

I ski, but I really am not good at all haha. It is fun though. I want to try snowboarding soon, but those guys seem to freeze up the trails because some of them just slide down on their boards

we do. its called a "ski slope" a "ski resort" ect.

if you do snowboard.
Dont sit down in the middle of the trail, move to the side
Dont sit down right off the ski left
Dont slide how the whole hill with your board sideways. you push the snow outta the way and make ice ruts and bald spots
If you fall, dont sit there and talk about how you ALMOST had that "jump" ( sorry hitting the ruts left from the thursday night races and falling on your face is not a "mctwisty" dont pretend it is.)

* Disclaimer, not all snowboarders do this, but it only takes one to ruin it for the rest
