Between now and your quit date, taper off. Smoke 4 less per day this week, then maybe 6-8 less the following week, then more till the quit date. That way it isn't so much of a shock to your system when you quit. It'll still be hard, and that's where your mind will have to help out. Prepare yourself, do your research on why it isn't healthy. Do Google searches for images of an emphysemic lung, and chronic bronchitis. Most of all, don't sit around waiting for the quit date- that's a sure way to fail.

While quit, wear a rubber band on your wrist and snap it everytime you get a craving. Reward yourself in little ways when you achieve milestones, no matter how small they are. Drink lots of water. Take up an activity- run, walk, or bike, and make it a part of your "new life".

It took me years of trying before I eventually succeeded. Like Terry, I tried and tried, but always went back, until I was decidedly good and ready. And you don't have to do this all alone, try http://www.quitnet.com. Good luck!

I quit once and decided that I didn't have enough reason to stay that way so I started again. I was over 2 packs a day within a week in spite of my plans of moderation

When I was sure that my reason was good enough to be permanent I quit and never lit up again. But it took about a year after the Stroke to get to that point

The hardest part for me was the group of physical habits that I had to break. Like when walking thru a door to outside I would have my first puff no later than the third step.

Breaking my hands of reaching for the pack took the most time. A pang of "Need Nicotine NOW" usually comes with that motion.

About 32,000 packs smoked will ingrain things like that

Well if listening to your story isnt motivation enough, then there probably isnt any hope for me. But knowing that you were able to do it after that many years, then I cant give myself any excuses. Thanks for the motivation.

And glad to hear you recoverd from the stroke.

I did that before. And you're right it did help, but it was too easy to start smoking, or have just one cigarette. I'll have to try the patch or something, and TeryY has shown a bit of inspiration. My grandad smoked for 45 years, and had no health issues related to it, so I was kinda going by his experiances. But I know that is a foolish thing to do.... kinda like jumping three story's and expecting to not break any bones, just cause some moron on the internet got away with it.

make it a habit to pay for your gas with a card at the pump. that way you don't fall into the old habit of always buying when you go to buy your gas.

I have 3 smokes left right now and tomorrow when i have none left for the morning that will be it. I've smoked for 12 yrs and i just turned 30 in may, my aunt died 4 days later from lung cancer. Being that should have given me reason enough to stop i just slowed it down to 8 smokes a day and know i'm back to a pack a day.

The last couple of days i've slowed down again and tomorrow will be it. I have a 4yr old daughter who needs me to be here for her now and later, thats one of my main reasons but your first reason has to be doing it for yourself. Good luck man cause i'm going to need some after tonight.

^^^ Yep, it will be a week. No smokes at all....crazy at times but overall it's been pretty easy. I've had to use the nicorette gum a little bit but i've been ready to do this for a while, just needed the extra motivation.

Thanks man....I still find it weird how you'll go doing everything with a smoke to not. I feel less stressed since i quit, makes no sense i know......maybe cause theres no guilt.

If i can go with none than anybody on this forum can, you just need the same commitment that you put into your ride, or whatever else.
