id go for the ///M, just like nick said, an ///M will always stand out, and the value depreciates a LOT less(assuming you dont drive the hell outta it and load it w/miles) oh, and only 97-98 m3's r 4 door, and remember, the 94 & 95 540's r e34's, and lastly, dont get the subaru.

PS: how much for the 325?

I voted for the e39 540i/6. I have an 2001 and they are awesome. They have so much torque and they are a sedan. If you have 4 steel wheels and snow tires, they work fine in the snow. I am very biased toward the e39. You could get an e39 528 or 530. The straight six cylinder is bullet proof, low maintanance as compared to the V8. You might get more for your money if you get a 6 cylinder 5 series. Modding the fiver is expensive, ask me how I know, but they are unbelievable cars.

I am not too keen on the 330xi, e46.

The subarus are great cars, but they are cheap and plastic inside. I love the feel and comfort of the BMW.

The M3 are great track cars. In your price range, they will have high mileage and I question their reliability, but they are an M.

Can you save more until next summer and buy a newer 540?

they also had an early 90's legacy, fwd only, and that was at 210k miles when they sold it to my uncle in law, who still has it and it still runs reliably as well.

all three have had little maintenance.
Well my cousin has had 2 subarus, both of which he's had to push on more than one occasions, but I'd still go with the BMW just because.

I say e46 330xi, because the 97 e39 540i, is the older bodystyle. Don't get me wrong, I love the e39 540i. I'd prefer something more of the 2000-2003.

2000-2002 330xi with the performance package. At least the Sports package the bare minimum. Something sporty.

We have one on our lot, but it's expensive. Well it's also a LOADED 2005. for $35,990, with 16,522 miles.

e36 M3 is too old too.

e46 is my vote.

There is no such thing as an E46 330xi performance package.

Subies are great cars, but they will never be a BMW. I would save and try to get a 2000 528i, 530i or 540i. I know subarus are 4 doors but it is difficult to fit a normal sized person in the back especially if you put the driver's seat back.

Montizzle, Then save your money and get the 540. I think that BMW lot attendant is correct in assessing the newer body style. You should join BMW NA. The magazine Roundel is published once per month and they have classified ads. I know I have seen some 2000 540 for 15-20K.

well ive been browsing NASIOC and asking around about the rex's and filling my soul with scooby knowledge lol. seems they have no major issues to look for like on the e36 (cooling system, subframe, RSM, etc etc lol) only thing mentioned was that the tranny wasnt strong enough for the drivetrain and HP. but that can be fixed with just a few parts and isnt very expensive. so i think the ///M3/4 is out b/c those are too hard to find and are too expensive no M FTL
