I just got back in town, so no more pay-per-minute internet!!

All right, new server is up and kicking hard. All systems seem to be a go, and watching the past few days, it seems to have stabilized.

Now the bad news though, you guys know I run UB for the community, not the money like most other communities, however by adding a whole new server, my monthly expenses jumped up beyond reasonable donations. I hate to do this, but I think I need to add some kind of advertising to UB, to help pay for the server. Sponsorships are difficult because we lack the magnitude of active members that other forums offer, so it comes down to pay-per-click, like I have on most of my other sites.

Whatever I do, I'll try to keep it so only non-logged in people seethe ads, so the normal members won't notice anything different at all. I'd like to hear some feedback on this from you guys though. This site belongs to you guys more-so than me, so does anyone else have any suggestions to subsidize the cost? I wish edwin were still around to drop a few G's and help us out, haha (he'll be back here soon after all this court stuff clears up I'm sure).

Whatcha guys think?

Welcome back hope it was a great trip. I like the idea of ads that non logged users see; it's good for us and there are many guest users making it attractive for sponsors

I don't care if there were ads, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to make some money, its not like you are taking it from us. You made this site for everyone, whats so wrong with them helping you out but helping you make some money.

The owners of so many forums out there, especially BMW forums, have found the money a community like this can make, and commercialized the entire site. By minimalizing the advertising on UB, I'm trying to send out the message that we are here strictly for information and the passion. I don't know if that's worked, or if my efforts have been in vein, but that was my objective.

I think most of us can live with ads as long as they don't turn into pop-ups or attatch hidden cookies and result in mailbox full of spam.

I said in one of my first posts ever on this forum that if advertising ever came, it would NEVER be popups, spyware, crazy flash, or anything else annoying. I use the internet too, and I know what pisses me off.

I'm with cels. I can live with banner ads, especially if it means having a stable network for the forum to run on.

Harry, here is a possible lead for you - they offer an affiliate program that might help the "effort"

Like everyone else I would be okay with banner ads or other forms if we need them to keep things running smoothly and they aren't a big distraction.
