Okay, I just got home from the hospital as well (going back in a few hours).
It's not life threatening. He's going to be okay.
There is a lot of swelling and bleeding around his head, and his entire body is wrapped up. He has a ventilator hooked up to assist his breathing, and a c-brace on his neck and spine.
Like Chris said, when he crashed, he dragged himself out of the window in a fairly mangled state. As soon as he got clear of the car, the entire thing exploded, scalding his left side. He was airlifted by helicopter from the scene of the accident to Grady Memorial Hospital
. Grady has the top burn unit in GA, and one of the top in the nation. It is known for being one of the best automobile accident hospitals in the southeast, so he's in good hands. If anyone calls or wants to send anything, I'm not sure his room number, but a phone call should reveal that. His full name is Zak Jones.
The doctor also said if the car had not exploded, he'd probably be walking out tomorrow. That's a bit unnerving how a front-end collision could result in the entire 2006 (brand new) M3 exploding. If he had not crawled out of the car immediately after the accident, he would not alive today.
They're probably going to begin the skin graphs on Monday, and depending on how well they take, he could be in the hospital as little as a few weeks, or as long as a few months.
Needless to say, I'm going to be pretty much living there until he's better.
The good news though, is his face is supposted to heal by itself with no permanent damange and look completely normal. His body and left arm might have some scaring, but in time, those will fade as well. Hopefully, he'll make a full recovery.
He is very lucky.
