I just got back from seeing him again today. Honestly he looked bad... really bad. Most people were in tears and there was a lot of praying and silence. The hospital is one of the best in the country for this, but God is who is going to really bring him through this.
They found a lot more third degree burning that they didn't see before. They'll also check on the skin grafting in 3-5 days, and see if it needs to be done again... but now they're having to treat his thigh, where they took the skin from.... it's basically another 2nd degree burn they made. He's going to be in the hospital (probably ICU) for at least another month, then step down for a while.
We're going to start limiting the visitation, because of risk of contamination, but we're still going everyday to be with his family in the waiting room.
If any of you are religious at all, please pray for him.

I went out to the scene, I am not convinced at all he was driving recklessly, its hard to describe, but there are two turns with a small straight in between. oooo I am going to draw it in paint. post it in a minute.
there were no skid marks at all, and the pole was at the second turn, which makes me think he made it through the first turn fine and something caused him to start the second turn late and slid off and hit the pole. The pole is probably 3 feet from the street and it slopes off, so if one wheel slides off it will pull the car down. He was only another 3-4 from the pole, which if you hit a pole and wrapped around it (no staying against it, I would think you would make it a bit farther then 3-4 if you are doing 80-100 or more) Once again this is just speculation but, we should have better pictures of the road up soon, a friend brought his camera out today

That is an intense picture of the burn. It turned my stomach to realize that he has 35% of his body looking like that. Burns are extremely painful. Thoughts and prayers to him and his family everyday.
I have to agree from that drawing that very high speed looks unlikely. After all a hit on a pole like that at 40 or 50 easily can tear into the car like that. No bumpers, oblique angle at about the engine compartment firewall...
Yeah I got some pictures with my SLR when Chris and I were there, I'll have to size them though and I'll process them in a little while and make a more detailed diagram of the scene in Adobe.

I'm sorry, I'm going to have to disagree. I looked it up on google earth and its actually one large turn and he fell off right at the Apex of the turn. Gimme five Minutes and i'll post the pictures from google earth here.
I'm not saying he was or was not driving recklessly. I'm disagreeing with the theory of two diifferent turns. Its one giant turn and he fell off at the apex. I thought there were two different turns tehre too when i was standing at the site, but upon redriving the turn AND looking at google earth, its actually one continuous turn
Here's the coordinates of the wreck for anyone who wants to plug them into google earth and look at the terrain and roads a little more.
34° 6'48.53"N
84°20'16.58"W
He was travelling north bound

I'm sorry to hear that he is not doing as well as they were hoping for at the begining, he is in my thoughts still and i hope he comes out allright and I wish Zak and his family and friends the best of luck and hope he comes out of this alright.
i just have a question, are these burns life threatening at this point, or most likely is he going to live, its just that hes going to be in the hospital for a while?
