What happens when you forget something in your car and you run back for "just a sec" to grab it? Could be a real hassle and you may not even have 'priority' and have to get in line.

or what to do when your alarm goes off?
"hello. 911. Yea my car alarm just went off"
911 op: "where's the car located"
"well, it's on the 38th level of the parking ramp and I can see the lights flashing from here"
911 op: "click - dial tone"
at least if something happens to your car (ie, it's dropped) you know exactly who did it and who to make the claim against. door dings are annoymous, which suck ass.
i love the idea, why didn't I think of that?

The retrival machine breaks and when you come back for your car their just like, "Sorry, uh can you call a ride...?" I like the idea for long term storage it would be really efficent and safe, but for quick and easy access it would be difficult, more so than a standard one.

Something like this, because it's so small, could be incorportated into new building construction, like highrises. Of course, you can vary the design, with more entrances/exits. As some have worried about rush hour, that could be fixed by having a staggered time shift, ie, not everyone starts at 8am. Some start at 8, some at 8:30, 9, 9:30 and so on.... and leaving would be the same staggerd method.
Emissions would be reduced, you'd save gas (not having to have to transverse up 5+ stories to get to a spot), and as Mullethunter mentioned, if anything does happen to your car, a claim against the company/maintanence dept would be much more easier than in a conventional garage. Incase anyone is REALLY parinoid, a photo ID of each side of the car could be taken as soon as it is delivered/retrieved and stored for later recovery should any questions arise.
And for a quicky, I'm sure there could be stairs incorporated into the structure, someone has to get to the levels at some point for maintence duties. You could go to an interface, find out ur car's location, run up the stairs, get your shit, and leave.
Oh, and how would your alarm go off? There's no one driving by to shake the structure with thier ass can. Seems that moving the cars as the vid showed, would be smooth, again, reducing any vibration. If it does go off, they should charge you a noise pollution fee... besides, most BMW alarms have a parking deck option that deactivates the vibration sensors.
I love the idea. I want to design one already.

I have 1 problem with your idea dough, and thats the staggered time, in real life everone comes in at a staggared pace, for instance at the office today i was in at 8:20 there were people there before me and they trickled in until 9:15ish and parking would still have sucked in a structure.

That's only because they all were suppose to start at a time roughly between 8 and 9am... some comming on time, other's late (as always). What I'm saying, is that instead of having people start only in that one hour time frame, you say that managers start at 8am, VP's start at 9, clerks, 9:30, maintance department may start thier shift at 11am. Cleaning crews start in late afternoon... etc. I understand how people work, they will be late, some anal persons will be early, but if you had to start at 10am, would you really be there at 8am?
It's worked out before, I believe there are some companies here in NJ that do that staggered time shift inorder to help with rush hour stresses.

^good point, also if i could goto work at 10 i might, but it would depend on when i got to leave, i would rather show up at 8 adn leave at 4-5 then be there at 10 and stay till 6-7
