Project Track Car
 

Ok, as some of you may remember, I plan on selling my car, to pay it off because I am going to college next fall (WWU Devin WOO!).

I am also not taking my baby with me and I dont trust my family members to drive it so I am just going to get rid of it. What I really want is an older car that I can buy out right and have some money to turn into a fun project car and weekend track ride.

My first idea was an e30 325is. I would first drop it, then I'd start saving up for a turbo kit probably to get a ton of power. Or maybe an m50 swap, I dunno. But the downside is e30 325is' are damn near IMPOSSIBLE to find in good condition these days.

My second idea would be a Porsche 944. We all know these could tear up a race track, and can handle a turbocharger. The downside is they don't cut it reliability wise, and have been told that they are a pain in the ass to fix.

my question to you is, do you have any other ideas? Other cars that I can get my hands on at a decent price, that can still perform well? Thanks

yeah man a clutch job on a 944 is something crazy like 2 grand. Maybe a 240sx would be ok on the track, or some other older RWD car.

Older datsun? Im sure u could find a 91 E30 for under 5 grand that is in good condition. I see them all the time here in Cali for sale. Look around.
Your not gonna find a great car without some searching.

ya i know the only problem is I want the plastic bumpers, as much as I want a track car, I need a car that still looks good.

If your looking for something for the track, I am really going to suggest an e30, you can do a lot of work on them yourself, and they are a Great car to learn how to drive with. All of my instructors at the track have told me that my e30 is a great car to learn how to drive in and you dont want to show up with something with too much power and look like an idiot cause you can't drive it.

Example from last weekend before i busted my caliper: There was an e46 M3 in my run group and I had this guy behind me from the start of the session and I was just waiting for him to pass my ass and he never did, he would get close ocasionally and then I would just take off in certain parts of the course, but it was obvious that he was not very experiecned with the car because he should have whooped my ass.

I'd go the Porsche 928 not the 944. The '44s are a pain in the ass. Clutch & drive line under good hard driving fail pretty easily.(pretty embarassing when your driveshaft shoots out behind you at a track event - they are notorious for coughing them out) Plus everything under the hood has those "damn round relays" that are not temperature friendly. e30 m3. perfect handling car because of the weight or e30 318is if you can't afford an m3.

What about a supra? Are they even RWD? They are able to get a ton of power and might be fun on the track. I have no idea about cost, reliabilty or availability.

I guess I would expand the search for the e30 to the west coast. Good luck with finding a track car.

A Supra is RWD. They're also pretty damn expensive to do right.

Spieluhr, do you really have the money to make a track car?

I figured that the supras were rwd since I saw a post on dtm with one that dynoed about 700 HP.

Tracks cars can be a little expensive to maintian. You want a dd that you can take to the track and enjoy, right?
