Propane or charcoal?

Just wondering what everybody's preference is, and why. I'm getting ready to invest in some new BBQ gear. My Weber 22" is on its last legs, and I want something bigger anyway. I've always been a charcoal fan, but the gas grills have me curious.

I love gas for simplicity and the lack of "coal" taste. That said, I still enjoy burgers or steaks off either.

I like the ease of the propane for most. But a good old "smoker" using coal & wood makes a "killer" steak

Can't beat the ease of propane, one with at least 2 burners, and a bit of wood chips in a pouch of aluminum foil poked with holes. Charcoal is also great, just use HARDWOOD charcoal, and a chimney to light it. No nasty aftertaste

Sure, propane is easy, but the taste that I get from coal is better. Though, g/f father has a propane, an Aussie grill that has lava rocks in it. I guess you could say that it is the best of both worlds? Turns on the grill using the propane and then runs heat from the rocks. Just to note, where I live, it is against the law to have a propane tank near any multi family dwelling, ie, a condo community or what have you. Hence why we're really just stuck using the charcol grill.

Look at a regular gas stove, the gas fuels the burner that creates the heat, in a propane grill it's the same principal, gas being burned to create heat. BUT, my friend, charcoal takes a while to burn yes, but there is a level of flavor that permeates from the charcoal bits, that is ingrained in the meat. It gives that slight chard flavor that is the imbodyment of grilling. Hence my vote for charcoal.
