OK, Friday was quite possibly the most FUCKED up day of my life.
We had a major windstorm due to hit the northeast, well...around 11:00 it kicked up.
Around 1:00 we're sitting in the office and BAM, the lights go out. So, with beer in the fridge (for Beer Friday's) I tell my employee we'll crack one and chill until the power comes back on. We finish the first beer and the power's not back on, so we head to a restaurant that's in the building to go have another beer and hang out with other people that work in our building.
No sooner does the bartender put the beer in front of me, the power comes back on...so, we quickly drink our beers and head back to the office to continue working.
45 minutes later I'm sitting in my office and there's an explosion outside my office window. I look out and see sparks flying off the telephone pole that's right behind where my BMW is parked, and debris flying through the air.
I take off down the hall and jump into the elevator (we still had power to the building) and punch the button for the 3rd floor. Well, no sooner do the doors close and the lights flicker in the elevator...so I punch the 1st floor again to get the door to open...nothing. Shit, I'm stuck. So, I try to call the building management office and the phone just rings and rings...damn, the phones are out. So, I call my employee and tell him to call the fire department to let them know I'm stuck in the elevator. So, there I sit waiting for someone to come open the door for me, realizing that with all the power issues in the city, there's a good chance I might be stuck there for a couple hours.
I'd tried several times to pry the doors open, but to no avail...but, after about 20 minutes I try again and I manage to get the doors open by myself and get out of the elevator.
So, I take the stairs (which I should have done in the first place) up to the 3rd floor to get to the parking lot to check on my car. When I get outside I see about 40 people standing around looking at the the lot, as I turn to see what they're all staring at, I see a 40' section of the roof that's blown off our building (and I mean plywood, 2x4's, tar paper, gutters, EVERYTHING) laying about 10' from my Bimmer!! When the section of the roof blew off, it bounced off an A4 and a Saab that were just to the right of where my car was parked. Luckily, the only thing that happened to my car is it was splattered with dirty water when the section hit the ground.
So, after thoroughly checking the Bim out for any damage and deciding that she's OK, plus giving my information to the fire department (who'd arrived to extricate me from the elevator and make sure no one was under the section of the roof) back downstairs to the bar we go for a couple more beers since the office was now without internet service.
As we're sitting at the bar working on our 2nd beer and a shot, I happen to look out into the hall and see a firefighter run by in full turn-out gear. WTF??? So, into the hall I go and I can now smell smoke. I see the city fire chief standing there and he's telling the building manager that everyone in tower 2 (our half of the building) needs to evacuate immediately.
So, back to the office I go, grab my notebook call my VP and tell him we're shutting down for the day and out to the stairwell I go. When I step into the stairwell, it's full of smoke...
Needless to say, I jump in the Bim, ask a passerby to lift the fire department scene tape they have up blocking off the parking lot...and off to home I head.
As soon as I can locate some pictures of the piece of roof that was by my car, I'll get it posted.
