I had a lizard that died last year. I had a lamp, and one of those heating rocks for him to sit on. I think for my next pet once winter is over, i'll get a turtle, or frog. I think what you mentioned so far doughboy, should be adequate.
I had a firebelly newt - it kicked ass and somehow had babies hehe
it came prego - gave the babies to the vet.
As for turtles I only had one for awhile untill I found a good creek to put um in and put a big red X with crayolas on it LOL I guess in case I ran into him again??? - be careful though mine snaped at me alot and it really hurt if he got ya!

Hmm, can't cut holes eh? Right, well, it's not like I'll be doing it myself. It's a professional company that is making me a "custom" tank. The hole is for a one inch pipe, sealed with a bulkhead. As far as pressure, there will only be one foot of head (max), so being that it's mearly a one inch diameter opening, sealed, with a valve, I don't see a problem. If a crack does develop I'll be sure to question this company's (glasscages.com) quality control.
Siphoning, true that can be done, however, as turtles are quite "dirty" animals, I would rather not suck anything thing that would have contact with that water for fear of possible samenila (sp?). I understand that there are other electrical pumps and what not, I've had bad experiences with them and as such, decided that going with a drain valve would be much more easier.

Yea... umm, tortoises live on land with minimal water. At least that's what I've been finding out through my searching online. I have a water turtle (that's what the orignial owner called him), they're the ones that love swimming. Most of thier tanks are aquariums whereas tortoises have boxed in ground, like in someones rock garden or in a homemade box.

Sorry to hear you put'em in a creek. Most home turtle pets, when reintroduced to the wild, never live very long and succome to the natural eliments or to the wild life.
The Fluval 404 pump came today. It's massive. The tank is orderd and we're picking it up on Sat, Feb 11th. I just now need to figure out basking areas. Found a forum on that but nothing conclusive yet.
Thank you all for your posts,
Dough

Catch me if you can.
I am reminded of the time my sister kissed a turtle and it latched onto her lip. I was 7 or 8 so I went to grab a screwdriver to pry open the mouth. My dad laughed at me and gently squeezed the turtles ears and it quickly let go. The whole thing was quite funny.

He wasn't a home turtle pet - I found him in a dried up creek trying to swim in the mud
I took him in cleaned him up feed him a lil and put him in a nice creek that wouldn't dry up

Well, no, for the time being I've just been calling him Mr. Turtle. As boring as it seems, it's simplistic enough, for now. My mom wanted to call him a spanish name... Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Pedro? or Petito? just doesn't flow right to me.

Yea I considered those, however, I was thinking of going more along the natural looks line... Plastic and hanging levels look kinda cheap to me. I was thinking about getting some slate or something and building up a bank or shoreline, but I don't have any reference photos for that.

Good. I wasn't catching on to that at first.
He's been getting more restless. I guess his tiny tank is getting to him.

I did mine with bricks and gravel. Slate should probably work fine, but it's going to take a lot of stone to build it up. make sure you clean the stones well.

Ok, FINNALLY. The little guy is now in his perminant tank. I've yet to make a stand for the tank, so he's sitting on my dinning room table. Not that we use it anyway.
So for the pics.....
The New Tank! 65 Gallons measuring 48in x 18in x 17in
Drilled hole with bulkhead and valve attached. I kinda got ripped off on the valve part, $15 is way too much for that. Saw it at Home Depot for like $6.
The Fluval 404 Filtration Pump. This bad boy does somewheres in the 300++ gallons/hour.
Substrate from Home Depot. Shit was REAL heavy! River Rock.
The basking area, I purchased from Home Depot as well. There's one red patio tile on the bottom as a foundation and eight different sized tiles for the steps. I tend to think it looks like one of those Aztec steps, like a lost city or something...
And lastly:
He's HAPPY!
Approximated cost came to ~$400 for everything except stand (turtle was free)

PS, still don't have a name for him. I've just been calling him Mr. Turtle for now.
