Oregon Assisted-Suicide Law

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...011700435.html

All over the news today... I'm not sure what to think about it. All I know, is there's going to be lots of framing murders to look like assisted suicides. heh

Quote:
The Supreme Court upheld Oregon's law on physician-assisted suicide yesterday, ruling that the Justice Department may not punish doctors who help terminally ill patients end their lives.
Whatcha think?

It just makes sense. I mean what else can you do with a terminal person in pain?

this is one of those grey areas. Personally if a terminally ill person wishes to end thier own life, I don't see the harm. However if you are not terminally ill then we as a society have a responsibility to prevent you from doing so and getting you psychatric help. My only concern is that the "actual wishes" of the person are followed. None of this "they told me once" crap. If that was the standard my wife would have me put down for sprainig my ankle. So if you really want to make your wishes known, put it in writing.

framing murders? unless you have a phd and are called docotr, that won't fly.

here's my question to all of you. if you were the patient, and you have cancer and an inoperable brain tumor and you know you're going to die, would you rather go though the agonizing pain of the "natural" death (and trust me, its jsut about the most painful thing you could ever imagine [read---uncle died of cancer]) or would you rather save yourself and your family the emotional and physical pain of a drawn out unwinnable battle with cancer?

i'll take the needle please

The procedures to qualify are very tough including residence time and quality of life.

So it isn't quite like flying into 'Vegas to get married.

Washington state may be next.

Washington DC has those who assist with Political Suicide already

I agree, and was going to post the same thing.
It's physician assisted, for the terminally ill. Generally speaking, your family GP isn't going to make that determination on his own.
People have the right, I believe, to die with dignity, and without bankrupting their families while the medical community forces them to pursue expensive measures that won't prolong their lives or improve the quality of the time they have remaining.

I really think it should be allowed. Provided it's done under the care of a PHD, and it's in writing to avoid all fucked up law suits.

I wouldn't want to die and would go through just about anything to live. I would even go as far as to say I am desperate to live. There is always some rediculous hope while you are still alive, but none when you are dead.

My answer to your question-- Myself = Never (someone else = occasionally)

Everyday garden variety suicides are not covered by the law.

People who want/try to kill themselves are "breaking the law" everywhere. I'm not sure what kind of punishment you get if you are sucessful.

The Oregon Law is a Death with Dignity law that allows only those who are going to die soon anyway the opportunity to finish their life without the tubes and estate killing hospital bills.
