GF Car- Stealership style

My gf has a 2001 KIA Rio and i know don't laugh, but i took the car down for a safety since she was buying the car off her mother. The mechanic said it needed front pads and rotors....exhaust clamp and the module for the dash lights and rear bearings repacked. Shoud've been 2 hrs max. i was there for 5 hrs. Then since the timing belt was coming due and the acc. belt was making noise they suggested it should be done. So she took the car in on boxing day and had the timing belt and acc belt done. She picked it up that day and the the belt she said was squealing like a son of a bitch. He said he'd adjust the timing belt to her her but obviously it was he had the the acc, belt overtightened. Now he says the alt. has to be replaced. Anybody think that since he over tightened it that the bearings got fucked? I think the dealership is hosing her....ready to lay the smack down.

The car only has maybe 110,000km's.. i know alternators can just fail without cause but i think all of a sudden it's happening just after the belts where done...seems kinda weird.

Oh ya when it was in on boxing day the drain bolt on the oil pan was all of a sudden leaking bc it was cross threaded hmmmmmmm. But does any body have an idea on the belt being overtightened, causing the squeal.

how so? it's only a sohc and the acc. belt drives the crank and the alt. Is the pully done? how would the pulley become misaligned. there isn't any adjustment on those i don't think.

Could also be a trace of spilled oil on the belt. Bad bearing can't be ruled out

If anything the "goon" working on it probably over cranked the belt tension and that put excessive pressure on alt bearing. There's supposed to be some (small amount) of free play. I'ld talk to service "mangler" and if he can't resolve the issue, then to the GM. You DO have rights as a consumer against people who try to hose customers. Most screw-ups are some tech not paying attention to detail or having bad day. I really don't think it was done intentionally, because "come-backs" are usually docked from their pay

Ya talked to the Service Manager /Mechanic today about the shit thats been going down with my gf's car. I made sure that he had full knowledge of my ability's to wrench on a car, he also said the charging in the alt was fine so it's a fucked bearing. He was trying to get out of it but i brought him back over and over again, fuckin 20 mins. talk over a overtightened belt that he put on and it's squeals right up to fourth gear now. So trying to cover his tracks and all he said he would swap out the old one and put a new or a reman in. He said he feels bad that out of doing something to fix the car he basically admitted to causing another problem. Anyways car will be going back for the 3 time to have this problem solved and he assured me it'd be done quickly. So it seems things will be going my way, so thanks for the reply guys and jybyte it's in Southern Ontario.
