If you're looking for either a Thule or a Yakima, here are the fit guides:

Roof mounts get up there$$$. You can get a trunk mount - 3 bike unit for around $50 @ Target

Bavauto has an E36 Thule system for $163 I believe. Remember though that you get what you pay for . . you don't want your new bike flying off on the highway :doh

Search craigslist for used ones.

Actually, Delmarco might be able to chime in here with some good advice. He recently installed one on his car.

the trunk ones we owned worked fine, this was when I still lived in England tho on an estate car (station wagon) so im not too sure about your car, but a lot of people when I lived in England had similar cars to yours and theirs worked fine, I just don't know from personal experience for a bodystyle like yours.

I have a trunk mount unit and it works fine. Just make sure it has cushioned hooks & pads. There's some "cheapos" out there that'll scratch the hell out of your trunk. (Keep drifting to a minimum :doh )

Sorry, there's this safety warning on the rack:

"Drifting (while bikes mounted on rack) may cause damage to taillamps, bumper, and other major exterior parts. Some side effects are ; minor swelling, bruises and even possible mayhem to pedestrians - if any of these conditions persist for more than 24 hours contact your lawyer"
:drive2

The trunk mounts work fine as long as you take the time to attach them properly, I've used them in the past with no problem. They usually need retightening once the bike is actually mounted and strapped in. Then pull over once or twice just to check if anything is coming loose. Again, try to stick with a name brand for quality construction . . Yakima's Little Joe is a good one for about 50 bucks, carries up to 3 bikes.
