This old misconception still won't die. I love my brother, but he told me to get a box of mothballs and stick some in my gas tank. Says the napthalene raises the octane in the gas. I looked at him and just said "yea, I'll try it, sure." Whatever, idiot. This horrible advice goes back decades. Although it's fairly harmless (unless you put too many), it does absolutely nothing. People will do anything to save $$ and buy lower octane gas

If he buys that one, tell him to try the "ping pong balls in the tank". This is another old myth, put p/p balls in tank and they bob around until sucked up against the fuel line then it makes the car stall. wait a minute or so, it starts and runs again - until the balls get sucked in again. Originally the idea was to piss off someone, but he'll REALLY BE PISSED when the balls finally melt and get into fuel system. (you can ask our old metal shop teacher)
