i see their are at least a handful of new yorkers on ub, this might be a bit of a dumb question, but whats it like their?
I read a lot of fiction novels, like spy books, and suspense novels. and it seems that everything i read revolves around or includes new york in some way, shape or form. I am a little fascinated by that city, and i would deffinetly like to visit one day, whats it like there? ive lived in los angeles and vancouver to name a few. how would new york compare to either of those cities. it probably doesnt compare to vancouver well but how about L.A.?

Things are a tighter squeeze here in NY area. LA by comparison has more breathing room. Don't drive if you are afraid of squeezing between cars to within mere inches, or hate potholes, and you better be quick with your driving skills to keep up with the cabbies. I'd say crime is probably about the same, although there are more organized gangs in LA. And like LA, not all areas of NYC are bad. People here are usually not friendly . . . you're liable to get your ass kicked if you say hello to a stranger. They are rude, lewd, and self centered. But it's all good, coz that's just how it is around here, you get used to it . . . sooner or later, you become one of them, too. But don't let that discourage you- there are tons of things to do and see. And whatever you do, DON"T LOOK UP (at the buildings). That's a dead giveaway of a tourist :D

hey dudesky, i may live in one of north americas most unknown cities, well to americans anyway, but I truely believe that we are the pothole capital of the world. our roads are terrible.

I'll dispute that "pothole" issue anyday. Minnesota "land of 10,000 potholes" should be the state motto. These clowns use roadsalt to fill in the potholes. Minnesota has the hwy dept fixing roads in sub zero weather - that they destroyed earlier with all the salt. You'll sharpen your road course diving skills dodging the pot holes. My friends in Wisc can attest to that - we share the same hatred.

Yea, I'm with that too, but one can only understand that if they're a New Yorker :D Most out of towners will describe us the way I did though, ha ha.

And I don't know about who has worse potholes, but I can tell you that living in the oldest part of the country (the northeast) really sucks because most everything is underground. That means that if there is any little problem with water, utilities, cables, phone lines, subways, yaddi yadda, the road gets torn apart. And it gets put back together in worse condition than when they started. Not to mention the salt on the roads, the trucks & freight that rolls through everywhere here :shoot

for Edmonton, its the extreme weather conditions that mess up the roads, we get to as high as 30deg celsius in the summer ( around 90deg f ) and as low as minus 30- 35 celsius in the winter. pretty warm and pretty cold. all that expansion and contraction makes for miss shaped roads.

Add road salt to that equation = "Welcome to Minnesota" :flag

New York is a great city. I have visited many many times. Have spent weeks there during single visits. The mass transportation system is awesome (except when the workers go on strike). You can find pretty much whatever you need. I love Manhattan. Yeah, like Dudesky said, people are not exactly friendly. I was used to that, however. That's how I grew up. I actually had a hard time adjusting to the friendliness in Northwest Arkansas when I got here a few years ago.

Lots of money are being made and spent there. The city is very fast-paced. Everyone has soemthing to do. Ray's pizza rules. Life within NYC, but outside of Manhattan (i.e., the other boroughs)is more laid back, but still a lot faster than most other places.

Oh yeah: learn how to parallel park if you intend to drive anywhere in NYC.

I know what you mean . . I was completely bewildered when I was living in El Paso TX for a while. Howdy! Huh?! WTF?!

I say howdy all the time, but I'd NEVER say yall, haha. Howdy came from having a gf who likes country music... it kinda stuck. :p

I totally relate. When my family was first transfered to Minneapolis in the late '60s - my relatives in NYC thought we got around on horse & wagons & assumed we had crank telephones. The pace in NYC is fast no question and everyone living there gets consumed in the flow. It's still a cool place & I love to visit. I'ld like to take a handful of hard core New Yorkers on a world tour sometime - then observe their views of being a New Yorker. They'ld have a different outlook on life.
I have relatives' who's idea of vacation is going to Atlantic City, NJ. A real trec would be to Florida. When I told them I went to Akita Japan last year for Christmas, they thought I was an astronaut or something. They just can't fathom that. All in all, I'm still a NYC'er at heart. They may be un-sociable appearing, but they are the hardest working & caring MotherF$%#kers in the world.
