snow is most certainly not more forgiving than hard ground.... in 6th grade i dislocated my shoulder and busted my mouth while doing some extreme sledding, my friends mom freaked out when she saw all the blood in the snow

im a pretty good skier and i went boarding for the first time this wensday.. its definetly not hard to learn imho, i took a lesson and the instructor i was with said he'd never seen anybody get the basics as fast as me.. if that means anything.. probably not.. but i had never been on a snowboard before and at the end of three or four runs down the mountain i was carving a little and linking turns pretty well.

you will take a beating though, i fell so much my first runs down , the mountain literally raped me, i had huge bruises on my ass at the end of the day.. lol.

if you decide to switch over.. just remember to keep your weight forward, on your front foot, and to keep a low center of gravity.. after i learned that it was easy.
