ok, they guy who sent it to you is a bastard. I get it. But here is a crazy idea that just may work. Why not request to use the logo from the pr department. I've been doing work with another german company which does business worldwide and let me tell you not 1 department in that company knows what the other department is doing. it is pure insanity.
And if they don't inundate them with letters, not emails, those are ignored, but letters on the otherhand, especially letters from customers.
Guys, don't email him yourself. I'm handling it representing the site, however if he gets a bunch of small annoying emails, it'll just make him look at our site closer and could potentially cause more problems.
The entire thing is a joke, i know, but I'd still recommend not emailing him yourselves.
yeah don't annoy this guy, but request permission directly from pr, this asshole is just a legal weenie who runs around making life difficult, let him move on to some other poor bastard while you make your request. It doesn't happen often but it has been known to work, occasionally.
Let's not make an issue of this, the guy is just doing his job. Sure we don't agree with it, but if we make an issue of it, he's sure to make notice and that will only amplify things. Okay we all agree we don't like the "nit-picking" - done deal, end of story. Harry did the right thing.

i compleatly agree with clapton, no sense and pokeing a sleeping bear, because we all know that things could turn real ugly if they wanted them to! i agree with what harry did and think we should leave it at that or if anything else comes out of it we should let harry deal with it in the same mature manner.

I would take such a joke and make sure BMW pays the price.
Call the Pr department. Metnion how a supportive community is being treated like trash and all that jazz (too lazy to write it out again) and i bet you they'll just LET you use it to avoid any widespread PUBLIC announcements of this event.

We had a similar letter a while back when we were named bmw-forums.com, they didn't want us using bmw in our name and didn't want the roundel used as part of our logo. Which is fair enough, it is trademarked and we were in breach of it, as ub.c was.
Big companies work hard to establish a brand and if elements of that brand are misused then it stops the brand from being as effective. I.e. when you see the roundel you should associate this with BMW, not with ub.c or bmw-forums.com etc.
For example I used to work for Ford Motor Company in New Zealand and they had a huge document outlining the ways that their logo could be used, how it could be used and even how much white space is around their logo. It's serious business.
Sending emails like "You suck!" to the laywers/pr firm isn't a smart move, they are acting on behalf of their client, they don't have it in for ub.c or any other site, and it just makes you look stupid.
