Picture of me last weekend in Tallahassee. before leaving for NYC yesterday afternoon. I flew back to NYC early this morning. I got an early Thankgiving break from school, but crazy assignments are due when we get back.

Haha back just in time for some cold weather. You got a long break man. Looks good. How the hell did you get that shit to match up so good?

trunk lid trim...
Painting for the lid trim took about two days...I did about 4 coats originally. Then messed up and it came out dark red. Then I spent about three hours lacquering off the paint and sanding it back down to the bare plastic before priming and painting again.
I got it on the second try. The key to paint matching is spraying lots of "very light" coats until the paint matches instead of spraying few thick "gloopy" coats.

I have more pictures up of the painting I did with tips in the DIY/FAQ section so check it out.

tis, tis, tis, the roof rack just doesn't look ride on a 3 series

delmarco 11-09-2005 12:08 AM

yeah. the rack is off. Torque warned me about the rack. I DOES increase fuel consumption and there is alot of wind noise on the highway at 60+ mph. Plus the rack creates a pocket of pressurized air that sticks between your roof and the rack. Somehow this air flow adds extra mass (not weight-but mass) to your car and fucks up the cars center of gravity and balance. Even if you do not have anything on the racks, you will feel the car tilt about 10-20% above normal at tight turns. It also make you feel as if the car is off balance when turning fast and sharp. In otherwords it creates an ANTI-Swaybar effect and steals from the vehicle's stability.

^^^
interesting...

delmarco 11-09-2005 12:17 AM

Spieluhr...a freind of mine at college told me about something Thule and Saris makes called "Fairing" which is a shield that slopes off the front rack bar and prevents wind from slipping under the bars...

BMW of course doesn't make them but i think the Saris brand fits BMW racks...
however Fairings which seems to be a just simple piece plastic can cost as much as the roof rack themselves.

The Saris Fairing is like $120...forget about Thule prices...
so for now I'd rather take the racks off when not in use.

Paint match looks great. You should do the bumper and trim pieces around the rest of the car next.

About the handling issue, it would be interesting to talk to some Aero Engineers to see what they have to say on the issue. If I run into any today I will try to get some answers.

yea delmarco, there probably is a roof rack that like folds down when not in use, because those things stick up way too high
