I used to spin in north Jersey clubs back in the late 80's and early 90's, I was known as DJ Twin C. Mostly freestyle and old school house, depending on where I was. Too much booze, sleeping all day the next day, wake up and do it again, Thursday through Sunday. Only so much you can take of that shit though. So I quit the scene and got a normal job.
DJs (good ones) are tough to find. A couple of years ago I helped a "soundbro" set up his brothers DJ gear and it worked slick.
We took a Chevy Astro van (bare bones, plain white, etc) we mounted a 36 channel Yamaha console, 2 mackie 1000watt amps, CD players, Cassette (dual decks),a small efx rack, and CD burner + an old B/L IMAC. 2 KLH Studio monitors & 2 Mackie full range spkrs. Spkrs mounted on back doors for transport with 200 ft of cable per cabinet.
He backs up to the clients house, places spkrs inside or out depending on the gig, lays out his playlist & takes requests. He records the whole party then offers CD copies to party goers & client. The whole rig cost about $3500 to set up and he made his money back in 7 weeks. He gets $300 for 4 hours +CD sales ($5.00 a pop) His music is CD, tape & computer (MP3) Using the MAC he places all the music in a playlist in the order of request and lets it rip.
probably just played mp3s. a good real DJ is hard to find these days.
manipulated music. i got a decent set up. basically just basic mixing, nothing to crazy. Just transitions between songs and a little digital alteration when need be.
I had my powerbook, a nakamichi amp from like 1992, two big nakamichi speakers, a numark two channel mixer(4 channel, but only two live channels at once) and two pioneer cd players with "jet zip and wah" for the sound changing.l They (the cd players) also have tempo changing.
no i didnt get paid. It was my first time, and i didnt think i should charge or anythign cause i didnt know how it would turn out.

what kinda stuff did you play just new stuff thats out on the radio, and what is played at like high school dances?
well the first two and a half hours was strictly hard trance/dance/club music/industrial(you prolly knoww hat im talking about.) then after that i mixed in some new stuff(ie gorrilazs) and some older stuff that is still good.(Ie nirvana/flogging molly etc.)
there was a wide range of music overall.
the last song was afternoon delight..lol
oh yea bohemian rhapsody was played..
