Caught Between A Rock And A Hard Place
I dont know how many of you know about youth travel soccer, but each state has a state wide tournament called the State Cup which culminates in a national tournament (all State cup winners) and ultimately a team in an age group (i.e. U13 boys) is crowned National Champions.
well I live in NJ and the State Cup is a HUGE deal. I come home and referee games throughout the season and have worked many State Cup prelim games this year. I was just offered to go to referee at the Quarterfinals this weekend in Ft. Dix, NJ. For referee's this is a big deal because only a select few are able to get assignments and work the games. I have been wanting to work the Quarterfinals and beyond for over a year now, and I finally get the chance, but i have to decline.
why? bc in Morris County, NJ we have a shortage of referee's to work the local league games and I waited until wed night (the last day my assignor gave me to notify him of my weekend availability). after i had not heard back from the state assignor about State Cup games, I accepted assignment for this weekend. and tongith about 20min ago I get the opportunity to work State Cup game...
this may make no sense to some people or anyone at all, but I'm just bummed out that I have to give up the chance to work State Cup games... well thats my rant for the night... I'm gonna go have a beer to wash away my sorrow..

Is there any way you can tell your local people what happened? Man, this sucks. If you have been invited, trust you will again in the future. I hope they do not take your declining this year to heart.
It basically means that you're in a situation in which everyway you turn is either a rock or something harder, metaphorically of course. It means there's no good solution.

Dude, I'd explain my situation to the local people......and tell them what you really want to do. Maybe it's too late, by the sounds of it. But...if this is a big deal. I went to State Soccer for my HS, and we won...but it was a BIG deal.
The least they could say...is no....we want you here. Which sounds like what you ended up doing. But see what their reaction is...when you tell em' that you got invited to the State Tourney. Then they'll realize how good you actually are at refeering.
If it's any consolation, I'd be happy that the local games got some good help & support from you. I mean ref'ing the Quarterfinals would be awesome, but in the end it's really about the kids, right?

yea I called my assignor and he told me that he could try to re-arrange my weekend assignment if I wanted to go down to Ft. Dix for the Quarterfinals, but I decided to decline and stick with the original schedule.
It's not about the kids, its more about my making connections with higher graded referee's. i'm currently a Grade 8 and will get an assessment in the spring to hopefully move up to a Grade 7. I'm doing this more for myself and personal achievement. I would love someday to be refereeing MLS games.
