Hi new here and to be honest new to BMW's.

Bought a 1997 316i compact, needs bits and bobs doing to it but runs well and drives well.

Need some info about the fob i got with it, it has BMW printed on it but is only a single button which when pressed makes a light flash on the fob

Key has no buttons on it other then the light...I can see an alarm unit under the bonnet on the right hand saide(passenger side) as i look at the engine.....would love to get this alarm working..can anyone point me in the right direction.

Welcome to United Bimmer.

All the BMW alarm fobs were either two button or three button. The alarm module is actually located behind the glove box. The horn is located in the engine bay near the airbox under the drivers head light. Are you sure the fob you have is a BMW one? It should have an FCC ID number on the back.

Ahh just noticed it says BMW approved and on the back it has MPT 1340 wt license exempt


So maybe not original BMW but the horn is deffinatley at the passenger side behind the head lamp on the wing.(RH drive car)

Any other advise..??

Here is a picture of the fob hopefully....I realise the rubber button is missing but when i press the swicth the little yellow light flashes. This is just at about 2 oclock near the button, sorry about the quality of the photo.

That's definitely not a genuine BMW key fob. I don't know what that does but it won't unlock or lock your doors.
