accident at work today....

so there was an accident after work today. for those of you who don't know, i work on top of lavendar mountain (also known as mount berry) here at berry colelge. to get to the access road i drive 4.5 miles up o mountain cmapus then take this dirt access road up to the house of dreams (a national historic landmark built in 1924 for the founder of the school as a vacation, relaxation home.). So i got up there around 2 (i worked a double shit 8:30-11 and 2-5) and we were chipping soe falen logs from a recent storm we had (floyd county is notorious for its storms). and we were coming back up from the trail to the house all crammed in the back of a pickup truck and one of the tires on the chipping machine completely blows out. but we have nowhere to put it cuz this is a one lane road so we drag it the rest of the way up mountain, destroying the wheel. By this point our shift is over, so we all get in our cars and startgoing down the mountain, an accord coupe was first, i was second (friends chevy tracker) and then two ford taura's and the rest don't matter. well we get down to this appro. 115 steep grade turn and we're all going 15mph and the girl driving the accord fishtails and then overcorrects. like way over corrects. the car flys over a two foot high stone wall and lands on two weels and the gas tank. I don't see this, al i see is brake lights cuz of the dust and i start following it until i realize i'm dwn in a ditch right beofre the wall. i slam hard on the brakes and swerve to the other side where i knew at least if i hit i wuldn't roold down the mountain. the cars behind me did the same thing. The accord is completely destroyed, the body was okay and everything, but when they pulled it out, the whole underside got torn apart. ruptured the gas tank, tore the rear suspension off, ruptured through the flow, bent the front axel. Thankfully, she hit where she did. the front of her car stopped litterally intches from a tree that most definitely would have killed her (if not from impact, from unbalancing the car and sending it rolling down the mountain.. as it was, she had to sit there and not move for half an hour till we couldl get a wrecker cuz of how the car was balanced..) but behind ehre, there was a ravine going down the side of the mountain that was completely clear that if she would have gone over the wall tehre, she most definitely would have tumbled all 600 feet.

I wasn't even in the car the crashed, but being behind it was the most harrowing experience of my life. like when i realized that if i follow her taillights through the dust, i would almost certainly would have been dead. and then thinking about my close friend literally teetering on the fulcrum between life and certain death.

just thought i'd share, thought it was a big deal.

damn dude. That is one of those horrible stories that turns out ok. But you still can't get it out of your mind cause you and so many others were so close to death. It's sad, but also a good thing that it was an eye opener, I am sure everyone learned a lot.

Most of all, glad everyone is OK

Glad to know it was not worse. Really scary story. I cannot even imagine the emotions you were all feeling at the time -- and even now.

Damn, man, that's freaky stuff. It's even worse when you know the person. Definitely glad to hear everyone's okay. I guess fate was feeling generous that day.

the really scary shit was when i was driving home from work with her today and it had jsut rained and we started to slide around the same corner and i was like shit here we go again. and i had a flashback and was thinking, my life is over. luckily i regained my senses in time to realize i had to correct without over correcting.

it really is the worst corner of the mountain, the road isn't bad, but this particular corner is a 15+% grade and its really tight AND the road is narrow.

i'll find someone with a digital camera and go take pictures of the corner, and the approach shot so you can see how steep it is and the drop off on the side of it.
