Michael Moore's Opinions on Katrina

God I hate this guy....

Quote:
Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st.
How can you blame the president for a natural disaster?

Anyway, discuss (keeping it respectful toward other member's opinions of course).

i think michael moore is a moron. sometimes its funny, granted. he's the little devil on all of our shoulders hat we wish we could say at one point or another, but don't. But lets face it. this is crossing the line. he's trying to make this whole thing humourous and play it off as another one f his political pranks jsut like taht movie he did, and at some point, he'll probably try to profit from the worst event in modern american history..... I just can't take it. He needs to shut his trap and open his wallet like the rest of the people of his socio-economic status. I saw a poor lady today give three pennies because it was all she had. IT WAS ALL SHE HAD. that counts for something.

I really want him to shut up open his wallet, and lend some relief.

I could never bring myself to do something like that and set up an opportunity to profit from the worst natural disaster this country has ever seen....

If i see him on TV walking around NO with a video camera, i'll go there and kill him myself.

disclaimer: you all know me, and i'm a pretty laid abck guy around here and defuse more fights than i have ever started, but i'm not going to sit on the sidelines on certain things... like michael moore being a douchebag and turning death destruction and mayhem into another one of his political jokes.

Some of that shit hes saying is BS and some of it isnt..

The part about there not being enough heli's and reserve troops is a crock of shit, there are plenty around ready to be called up. Infact not many of the states have more than 50% of their reserve troops gone. Yea they should have been there much faster but i dont see him cirticizing that..

It is true that the budget to fix and improve the levees was cut. The levees should have been brought up to code for at least a category 4 hurricane.. it was just a disaster waiting to happen.

true. i can accept that some of its true. but there are more productive ways of doing things... he points out all the problems, but no solutions. very reactive... he should try being more proactive (i had to read 7 habits for highly effective teens in my freshman seminar class)

I saw an Air Force pilot being interviewed some years back, who had one of the best quotes I've heard . . "Part of our job is to defend our citizens' rights to free speech; our focus is not to dwell on how they use that right". At the end of the day, I think Moore counts his blessings for being American. There are very few countries that would tolerate his crap.

On the other hand, if the Nat'l Guard had been there on time and the situation didn't turn out that bad, Moore would be criticizing the gov't for wasting taxpayers' money. The same people who scream for cutting the military budget are the ones who are angered by (the military's) unpreparedness. You just can't please everybody, and things happen for whatever reason or other. The critics' time would be better spent towards a positive solution rather than mouthing off about inadequacies. That does absolutely no good in the here and now for those who are suffering as a result of this disaster.

The thing we forget the most is that "Critics" really have no power other than to sway public opinion. That is what Moore tries to do.

I personally am truly upset / apalled by our response to Katrina,

Small Items like a self contained field hospital with 100 person staff (think M.A.S.H) not deployed. It is sitting in a parking lot in Missippi with the Doctors trying to get permission from someone Federal to go into the zone.

The Emergency Fire Response prepositioned units still in their garages because no one has "Formally" asked for them. That sounds like needing a specific form signed by the right Official!
They were mentioned to the Governor of Louisiana about Thursday and were still in the garages Saturday because he didn't say Please or something. 200 radios, personal protective equipment, portable shelters and emergency rations in each of 3 locations not that far from the disaster area.

Did every Tugboat and Barge on the Missippi sink? Did you see any rescuing people from places like the Superdome? Did you see any boats doing early rescue work( other than the squadron of Swift boats that seems to be stationed around there) It was almost like the rescue effort was designed around a Dry place and too inflexible to adapt to local conditions. Busses in a FLOOD!

Fuel trucks not allowed in to service emergency generators because it was too dangerous to go/escort there. I seems to go on and on......

The talking heads landed spinning. Why we can't do that until tomorrow or the next day may seem logical to people sleeping in beds at night and standing in front of TV cameras by day. But not doing anything until EVERY Toy is in place and all of the I's and T's are correct on the paperwork seems like a derelection of duty to me.

Bush is the Commander In Chief and in the end all responsibility falls on his shoulder just as it would on any sitting Presidents shoulders. It is HIS TEAM and what they do and how the do it reflects on the President.

Mr. Moore and the many others to follow want to be sure that it sticks there. Firing underlings who may not have any control of the process probably won't cut it in this day and age.

No, I am NOT a Moore fan. He coats Fact with Emotion and tends to obscure Truth with contrived tears when just the plain Truth would do the job.

Damn, this is a Soapbox I am standing on!

Time to get off! But in case you couldn't tell, I am PISSED!

except in the united states, public opinion has a GREAT deal of power, therefore he has power if he can sway opinion.

I like that he's trying to force the presidents hand, but i think that he went about doing it the wrong way.
