Qatar gives $100 million to US for hurricane relief

DOHA (AFP) - The Gulf emirate of Qatar announced it will donate 100 million dollars to relief efforts for the US victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The aid was granted by Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani "in the name of the government and the Qatari people," the official news agency QNA said.

Quoting a foreign ministry spokesman, QNA said: "Qatar expresses its sympathy and its solidarity to the US people and government in these painful circumstances and sends its condolences to the families of the victims in this humanitarian catastrophe."

Three other Arab countries -- Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates -- have also offered aid to the United States.

The hurricane wreaked devastation on the three southern states of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama and caused thousands of deaths.

A US-based risk management company that specializes in disaster recovery said that the damage caused by the storm in Louisiana and Mississippi is likely to surpass 100 billion dollars.

That's WAY above what other countries are donating. Awesome, I guess Qatar is trying to get on our good side for some reason. haha

I believe we have had heavy presence in Qatar for military operations for iraq and other things (so i think they are on our goodside), perhaps they are just hitting us back. In anycase its a very generous aid.

It's ashamed that a super power USA can't handle the situation at New Orleans.Even Sri Lanka is giving a donation to USA.Cuba is supplying aid to USA.You are getting help from a thrid world country.

oh we can handle it no problem. we dont need the help. but the help is to keep things at normal. dont forget most of our military and society is still designed around the thought of an apocolypic nuclear war with russia. we can handle alot. if the right people had gotten off thier asses and realized the scope of this, we coulda had it done in 2 days. but we didnt. i donno whose fault it is. but it happend.

to the other side. qatar has always like us. if im not mistaken ( which i might be) they are the ones who built an extremely expensive airforce base and then said " oh ya, we dont have and airforce. united states would you liek this base?" ( not literaly but u get waht i mean)

I'll add something else that my mother organized last night. Ricky Martin Inc. and Ricky and friends have started a relief effort sponsored through ebay. Ricky, and his friends Madonna, Antonio Banderas, Fat Joe, Eva Longoria and other close friends will be posting items up for auction on ebay such as spend a day with a star, a signed copy of madonna's new book taht isn't out yet, spend a day on the set of housewives and eat dinner with ricky martin. Ricky Martin will personally match the donation amount of each winning bid.

this may sound like not a lot, but kepe in mind the last fund rasiing he did was win a night on the town with ricky martin and the winning bid was $53,xxx dollars. Each "friend" along with ricky will donate one million dollars.

look for all this to come together here in the next week or so.

this is all not official yet, nor has it been released officially to the press and my mother needs this job... so lets keep this one in the lounge... THIS lounge, and nowhere else for that matter, at least for a while.
