yo, sry to disagree with you death, but please, dont get an american car, they arent nearly as reliable as anything german or japanese, with the exception of trucks, if your going to get an american car get a truck, please dont get an american sedan, please! lol
I just said that cause my buddy who owns em has had good luck with em. they are cheap and parts are easily accesable. But your probably right about the relability isuses.
And your right, for $5,000 you could probably get an E36, maybe a 93-94 model year.
As for the S13, there kool and all but is that what u really want? I would own one if it wasnt my daily driver, if i had the money i would turn it into a drift car.
Yeah I was joking The most riced out Hyundai Accent-GS or whatever they're called tried to race me today. I just laughed at the kid and made a left into burger king.. what a moron. I'd say get an E30 sphuz. Less electrical problems that can occur and generally more reliable then an e36. Plus they run forever and would be a great starting car for a bimmer enthusiast. Not hard to drive either by any means. My vote is for e30
s13's not a bad idea.. theyre probably easier to mod than e36's, theyre cheap right off the bat, and theres a lot of used parts floating around. They can look really nice with rims and a front bumper or spoiler of some sort too.
well, if you are smart about which one to buy, you may not have to worry a great amount about replacing parts, b/c even though it is expensive, they are also reliable, right? and they are not only expensive for their parts, but for their class, their feel, and their luxery, and some other cars just dont have that, like the s13

You "may" shit a diamond next time you crap, but I doubt it.
I understand the brand loyalty, but c'mon. There is no way a Bimmer is as reliable as a Honda, nor as cheap to fix, nor has the same availability of parts.

Its a sacrifice you make for the performance, it you dont care about how well your car handles then a hondah may be the better car for you.
Civics arent exactly cheap as i remember, a friend of mine was looking to buy one with about 100-130k on it and it they were all around 5-6 grand.
I would much rather have an e36 for that amount, even if it costs more to maintain.

Well, I remember being 16, having a shit job, only able to work so many hours and keep up with my schoolwork, etc.
If I hadn't owned a 5.0 Mustang, the every yokel knows how to fix and parts are EVERYWHERE for, I'd have been one broke, angry kid.
I guess parents are more generous these days, or kids just have more money if a used BMW qualifies as a good first car...that or they like spending money.

school isnt a problem. im homeschooled (and dont even think about saying "heh, well that would explain your spelling) so i can work from 9am to 9pm then finish up my school work after i get off of work. or wake up early and do my school work then. either way.
I agree about the reliabilty part of a honda, but they're not as reliable as one would think. Yes, they are more reliable then a BMW which is obvious, but there are TONS of problems with older/early 90s Honda's. Granted you probably won't have a blown engine unless the timing belt has never been changed (which is VERY common) but you will still have lots of little things that will annoy you. And parts for BMWs are as available as they are for Honda's now and actually, BMW parts especially for the e30's are generally around the same price or cheaper now.
Look at it this way, you buy a used car, you NEVER know what you're getting into whether it's a BMW or a Honda. Both had previous owners and years of driving so you never know what had fully happened to any car. If you're going to get a bimmer, I would suggest buying from someone who is on a forum and shows a great care for BMWs. The real enthusiast's will always take care of their cars better.
i agree with catalyst 100%, and i agree w/jrhaile except i didnt know half the stuff he said was actually true, but the reason i think he should go for BMW is, just like catalyst said, not because of reliability, but i think he should sacrifice that in exchange for all the other things BMW has

An E30 Sedan or Coupe would be a perfect first car, engines are strong, and they are very fun, effeciant, and great looking cars(if taken care of, like most cars).
I could see you driving a E30 318iS or something.
