The e30 would be a great car, it handles well, it will teach you how to drive a car hard and gain valuable experience, and become a good driver. They are fun and get a good MPG. I would sugest the 325is or 318is as they should be the most fun and get a manual transmision becasue they are fun and you should know how to drive one (as should everyone). Just my $.02.

...Wait, you would consider a 2002, yet you are comparing your options with 1/4 mile times?

I know you dont want to hear this cause i know i didnt at your age butttt,

dude seriously...for your first car, buy something cheap, slow, and easy to work on, and cheap parts, that way you have to work on it a lot and you will learn about how everything works and you will learn to respect it more, no joke. I bought my first car at 14 it's a 1967 VW Beetle and man it was a mess, but i worked on it till i was 16 and ready to drive and it was a very dependable car, and loads of fun, not to mention kept me out of trouble. Now i know old school VW's are way too expensive to restore now, (have spent $28,000 on mine in the last 8 years) but it runs 11's and is mint! i couldnt get rid of it, too many good memories. But in all seriousness start off small and work your way up. No sense getting a HiPerformance car as a first car and destroying it.

Point being, hunt down an E21 or an early E30 318 or 325e, or a watercooled MKII vw jetta, gti, golf, all awesome cars for bombing, learning to drive, and learning how things work and how to work on them. That teaches you patience, dicipline, confidence, and just plain mechanical smarts!

I dont reccomend a 2002 for a first car though, they are classics, those are what you buy for as your 3rd car they are great cars but like old air cooled VW's expensive! unless you score a deal on a fully mechanically restored one for like $5k

granted mine is off the charts but you dont have to spend as much as i did.

Im not trying to be a dick im just looking out for you too many of my friends in HS, back in the good ol days, destroyed their "Fast cars" but mine kept going kept me out of trouble too, it sucked having the bomber, but now that i look back i wouldnt change it for the world

Edit: Wow i just realized i have owned 6 cars now

Thats a little more than i had to spend on my car.. haha, basically search long and hard for exactly what you want, and it will come along at the right price eventually.

An e30 325is could be had for 2500-4000 and those are great cars, LSD.. pretty good power.

The three cars i was actually looking at when i was searching were e30 and e36 325's and 944's..

944 is a no go man, im sure they are at least somewhat reliable, but when shit breaks.. $$$$$

Also.. heres a car to look at.. e36 325is, 5 grand, 120k miles, look at the mods too.. LSD, and alot of other tight goodies.. i wish i had the money for that thing. The guy is desperate, i talked to him on the phone, he dropped a huge deposit on another car and needs to ditch his 325 quick.. 5k is as low as he will go.. haha, i already offered 4500.

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=396095

At 5k that is a KILLER deal.

I'm with Kraut & Catalyst. You need a car that runs good, and parts are cheap and readily available. Your life is gonna suck for the next few years if all your money is being dumped into your car. A turbo for a first car is a bad idea, IMO. And if you think BMW parts & labor is expensive, don't even think about a Porsche!

I agree 100%. Except for the fact that I have been dumping all my money into my car for the last 3 years and I love it.

My opinion...
*Look for a nice e30, but take your time. Save your money to make a nice down payment, maybe even buy the car w/ cash in full.
*Get a 5spd so that you can learn to drive one. When I bought my car I had never driven a manual before, and now I swear I will never own another automatic.
*As you learn more about the car you can start to mod it. Parts are expensive, but not compared to other BMW models. And you can get anything and I mean anything you want for an e30.

-Matt

Well if u wanna get a car to like fix up and shit, i recomend something like a cavilier or a corsica. My buddy has a 1990 cavilier and hes currently fixing it up and modding it. There relaible cars, parts are easily accesible, cheap to fix.

Wow, I think I stand alone in this thread. heh

My car is my first (drove a jeep for a little bit before, but it was my dads on more of a loan, didn't count).... and I'm looking into building a turbo kit for it....

However I do respect what everyone is saying on this topic (and however hypocritical, agree with most of it).
