don't cars get recycled in the US?
nope thats euro hippy stuff
really, most scrap yards recycle the metal. prices on steel, lead, and copper are skyrocketing theres decent money in it. nothing is legally obligatory. part of the recycleing process is destruction. tear the car apart, seperate steel from aluminum. grab any copper you can, chuck any plastics, leathers, woods etc. i donno how europe does it, but i dont imagine they are any gentle'er with them

i hate to disagree,if the car hasnt been in a catostrophic accident, then it is taken to a scrapyard so it can be dissassembled and parts that people need are sold and the ones that arent are stocked. after a car has sat at a scrapyard for a certain period of time or no useable parts are left it is then crushed into a cube and sent to a processing plant.
a good example of a bmw only scrapyard/car breakers (all wrecked cars go to them and they dismantle them) is http://www.fabdirect.com/ , check it out, they sell everything and now have an online catalogue too.

but the parts are awfully expensive
in Europe there are specific norms for car recycling...
first parts are sold but when the time comes and the car gets crushed, it has to be stripped of everything
like just the body, no engine or transmission, no glass or plastic... all other stuff has to be sorted and recycled individually
and te cars get pressed into blocks of metal, not shredded
