Nah, I've known we are slipping for some time. Not necessarily to a 3rd world country (which is an outdated term - they are now considered - Lesser Developed Countries. :-D)
I disagree with the second statement, though. 1930s-1950s.

This is true. The crash in 29 brought about hardship that carried on. Going into WWII we were developing the nation (which is why I included it because it was a direct precursor), however, and in WWII we asserted ourselves as a global power. To go into the second WW with the might we had proves that, even during the depression, we weren't sitting on our arses. The golden era is the highpoint of society. After WWII, people came home, got better housing, had good jobs, economy was very stabilized, we ruled the global economy having everything pegged to the US Dollar, people were flooding our immigration offices to become a part of the American dream, scientific advancements were huge, people were becoming more educated, crime was relatively low, etc. We set the standards in professional business, in culture, in military force - we were actually admired by a large portion of the world. Sounds like a golden era, to me.
Sure we had threats from oponents, but within our borders it was the golden era. Rome had a golden era, but still had people on the outside that wanted to take it out.

terry that is true we are on our way to be a third world countries if we don't stop helping others. We have to help ourselves first then we can help out others
Unfortunately a Golden ERA has to last far more than a few years.
A Golden moment maybe.
The taxation rate during that period was scaled up to the point where 98% of every dollar earned over $50,000 went for income taxes.
The only carefree people of the 60s were the hippies who could skip off to Canada and the very rich who could buy their kids out of anything. They were not sending their kids to Vietnam to get shot at like everyone else was.
BTW Our Vietnam started in the mid 50's not long after we quit playing in Korea.
The draft was a real threat to people the age of most who post here.
Yes we made great technological leaps then but they were to keep ahead of where we thought the Russians were. Technology leaps more in a month now than it did in a year then anyway.
I am still waiting for Peace in Our Lifetimes!!! Getting pretty old waiting too.
