European Travels

So I am going to Europe in a few weeks, so far all I know is that I'm meeting up with my friend in Amsterdam and I arive on the morning of the 21st and leave from Adam on the 30th. So we will check out Amsterdam and all it has to offer for a day or two and then plan to check out some other cities. I'm looking for suggestions, Rome, Paris, London have all come up as possible travel locals. This weekend we are going to discuss where to go so I wanted some options to put out there.

Today I was looking into going to Germany and renting an a4 for the day and going to mecca (the ring!), turns out for $215 I can get a manual a4 for a day!

So any other suggestions for places to go, keep in mind we only have a few days and would probably only spend a few days in each location and will be trying to do things on the cheap.

Ummm, that's kind of like asking - if I go to the States, where should I go. lol. What kind of budget are you on? How long are you staying in the EU? Those will all dictate where you go. Contrary to what many think, Europe still takes a while to get from one side to the other, without taking a plane.

Having that said:
Prague I've heard many good things about.
Ibiza
Barcelona (probably the best nightlife in Europe, perhaps next to Ibiza).
German Alps
Coppenhagen
Nice
Paris
Napoli and the Amalfi Coast
Sicily
Athens
Vienna
Brighton (South UK)

... again, it really depends what you are looking for, how much time you have, and what kind of budget you are on.

Btw, I think the autostrada is better than the autobahn.

Cap if you saw i arive on the 21st and leave the 30th. I have been to Paris and Rome and a few other destinations so I was looking for other suggestions besides that, and yes its a very open ended question i'm looking for places people have been to or know people who have gone to them and have had a good time.

Witey damn you thats very close to the ring!

Sounds like I need to check out Prague

Btw, I think the autostrada is better than the autobahn.

I would also recommend Costa Brava in Spain, I've heard it is off the chain over there. I also go with Cap on Napoli, me and the family are stopping there for a couple of days while heading to see the in-laws in July further down south (A little bit past Bari).

And yes, the Autostrada is a hell of alot better than the 'Bahn, way flatter and straighter(except for the damn tolls )

If your close to Heidelberg, let me know and you're more than welcome to come for dinner and shoot over to Hockenheim ring. 5 minutes from the house

Nick, I just caught the 21-30. My bad.
9 days isn't a whole lot of time to try and explore Europe. The Netherlands alone could take up that much time. I also don't think you are going to see all Amsterdam has to offer in 2 days. Personally, on a one week trip, I'd stay regional. If you are spending 3 days in Amsterdam, then planning on going to London (that'll take you half a day, traveling there, half a day traveling back to Amsterdam for your return flight), that's 4 days off the bat. That only leaves 5 days. That isn't taking jet lag into consideration, either.
So, 5 days. You could spend that in London and call it a wrap.

I would go Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Cologne, Luxembourg, Brussels, Bruge.

Or, maybe head north to Coppenhagen (but this will eat up a lot of travel time).

I'd try to keep it very regional, though, or else you're spending more time traveling rather than interacting.

btw, elsabor - what brings you to Germany?

My brother just got back from Germany not terribly long ago. He was in Stuttgart, Munich, and Friedrichshafen touring with a doo-wop band.

I'm considering Europe for my MBA. How's the market in Germany for MBA holders? Any idea?

I'm in the Army(20+ years right now). Been in Germany since January 2005 and extended until 2010. Gives me more than enough time to get all I can for my baby (the E30).

I can ask and check if you give me a little time.

You probably already know this, but dont just go to the tourist places. Experience Europe for what it is. Go clubbing, watch a football game, so shopping in open-air markets, do things that normal Europeans do, it's much better than doing the tourist-y crap.

I agree with this. But, doing the touristy stuff can also be fun. I'm from New York but still love going up and doing the touristy stuff every now and again. :-) It's a breath of fresh air. Don't do it at the expense of taking in the culture that pervades daily life, though.

Word of caution - if you see a footy game, be careful! They don't play around!!!!!!!! lol. For real. They see a yank at a match and you're possibly a candidate to catch a proper thrashing. Not saying that you definitely will, just tellling you to be aware and alert.
