i'd have to argue that it depends on the driver. and, like RSF5 said, BMWs do that too. sensors aren't that big of a deal. from what i understand, mazda is a pretty reliable car.

i hear minis are way fun to drive. like most BMWs, they feel more powerful than they look on paper. and yes, they are a BMW product (+1).
FWD isn't as bad as people say. i drive my dad's 96 volvo 850 R-type (FWD) a lot and it is quite fun (i also enjoy the "turbo" guage on the dash - when i'm acclerating, don't think i'm watching the road ).

My Mom has one of the last coopers (just the base with a cvt) and its a great little car despite its lack of power and a manual transmission. I really like a small car so I have no problem with them and they have great visability. I'm trying to figure out what my price range is right now, i'm mostly looking at things around 25k and less, I want lease payments to be less than 350-400 a month. Once I get a few quotes and do some drives I will make the final decision on what to get. I decided today that I really like the e46 330ci, I was thinking about how nice the one my dad had was, and at the right price with some sort of warranty might be a good move.
The car will strickly be a DD and I will not be moding it (maybe some rims and track pads ), and more then likely it will also be a lease because i will hopefully be looking to upgrade in a few years. I do want something relativly fun for everyday useage. I'm not going to lie I think I like the idea of a new car better because I'm really intersted in something with a warranty so I should't have to pay for much. I plan to start driving cars next week. I think it will probably be about a month or two before I make the actual purchase (or as long as it takes me to save up enough for a decent down payment)
As far as audi goes, the only one i want is an a4 avant with awd, if you can find me newish one at a good price i would be intersted.
The Lexus IS is nice but not my cup of tea.
For the VWs I want to dive them but have heard many horror stories from current/previous owners so I'm not so sure I want to go that route.
More then Likely the Mini S, and Mazdaspeed3 are the front runners, a CPO e46 330ci might be in the running as well. That or I can just go find a few more e30s!
E46 ftw dude.
I love my 330. just go manual obviously.

In most intentions this car is only DD use, I will still have the 318 for the track until i buy that e30 track car i want to build. If i get something I might take it to 1 or 2 track weekends and am only intersted in doing it once or twice just to see what its made of/gain a better feel for handling etc.
The S4 would be nice but again I want the avant (wagon) version if possible, and the audi dealers in my area dont have any s4s and very few a4s at prices that i'm that intersted in.

I would agree with you about Lexus, except I dig the IS300. Lexus is way more reliable than a BMW, a plus in my book. It can be fun to drive with some tame mods. The engine is the base platform for the toyota supra TT. It has huge potential if you plan to drive it as a DD for few years and then make it a project car. Plus, you can get a 5 speed, the prices are reasonable too.
Don't get me wrong, but my BMW has cost me at least 12K in maintenance and repairs the past 3years with only 67000 miles and I don't beat on my car and I drive it as a daily driver. That is not including any money for mods, gas, insurance. I bought my car with 37000 miles on it in 2004 also. It seems to me that is a lot for a car with fairly low miles on it. Plus I have also done a lot of work myself. Maybe, the V8 BMWs are more costly to maintain than the 6 cylinder platform. Just my opinions though.
