steering wheel shimmy - United Bimmer Community

Hello everyone,

i have a 2007 530i. when i start the car in the morning and begin driving, once i get up to about 50 mph the steering wheel will "shimmy" but the car will continue to track straight. after about 15 minutes of driving the shimmy will stop. this only happens when the car has been sitting overnight. does anyone have any ideas? oh the tires are not run flats and they are factory.

first of all, this car is under warranty, correct? and is this every morning or just sometimes? i would presume something settles in your tires and when you move it gets spread around, and when it sits for a while it settles to the bottom again....(do you have some kind of liquid in your tires?)

Might be a wheel weight that isn't noticeable until you get to a certain speed, are you done driving it at speed after 15 minutes or do you continue to drive that fast?

im gonna say wheel weight.
but if that doesnt resolve it take it to the dealer.

I would just go to the dealership, since the car is under warranty. Just out of curiosity, do you have Active Steering?

Do you have, or are you aware of the tyres having been treated with anti puncture fluid?
As experf stated, if you have any form of fluid in your tyres it can settle overnight causing a slight shimmy when you first drive the car in the morning.
I seem ro recall reading about this anti puncture treatment and you are supposed to use a measured amount per wheel, if too much is used it can lead to an imbalance of the road wheels.

I think all new 5 Series come stock with run-flats
