Any DIY'ers in PB County Want to Get Hands Dirty? - United Bimmer Community

Hey guys, I needed some work done on my ride and someone here told me it was real simple work and my indy was overcharging me. He said DIY and I was like, problems with time, lack of experience, and just a host of other things. So he said maybe someone here would help me out for a few beers, lol... now I dont expect that (altho it'd be great) but just let me know if you love working on BMW's and you have time to help me out and what compensation would you need. I also have many skills, mostly in sports (golf, tennis) and computers (techie), so we can also trade services if you'd like. I'd order parts from Pelican or wherever, or you can do it as well, I'm flexible.

Here is the first one in question, quote given by my indy:

That actually doesnt seem that bad to me. 2 hours labour to change the fan clutch, the belt tensioner, and the ilder pulley is average.

I paid 3 hours labor to have my water pump and thermostat replaced back in 2006, before i had a garage to DIY in.

I didnt think so either but some said it was a ripoff because its such an easy job and I should be able to just do it myself. I dont shy away from anything mechanical, its what I studied, but I just dont feel like working on a car in this stage of my life, nor do I have time. Maybe they meant the parts were jacked up? The indy did say I can get my own parts if i want and he'll still put them in... but no warranty then. I was gonna look up some price comparisons on Pelican or something... u dont think even the parts prices are bad?

Its fairly easy to do yourself. However it will take longer if you have never done it before. For someone doing it everyday i can see it only taking two hours. The part prices seem fine to me. I get all my OEM parts at Bimmer Specialist. I find their prices to be the best.
