Inspection I Service

For those of you wishing to freshen up on your BMW's maintenance costs:

Vehicle: 1999 BMW E46 328i
Mileage: 98,000 mi

Inspection I service upfront costs: ~$410

What they did exactly, I don't know, and at this point it's not important, here is what they found (prices are estimated):

Oil Light Sensor busted, $352.60
Passanger Light Low Beam bulb busted, $61.85 (that's for one friggin bulb, non HID)
Brake Fluid Flush, $123.05
Coolant Flush, $133.75
Control Arm Bushings cracked, $593.64 (again)
Shock Mount, $324.51
Shock, pair, $627.29
Front Brakes, $594.48
Transmission Failure, $?,???.??

SOOO, not counting the tranny, but including the service charge, here is what this fucking piece of shit BMW will cost me:

$3,212(est.)

What I allowed them to do, coolant flush. And that's it. The control arm bushings are covered under the Inspection II warranty when they did it then. And well, everything else I can either do my self or at this point it's not important. Plus I just don't give a fuck about this piece of shit BMW any more.

The cussin' after seeing the bill= Priceless.

Not too bad tho; everything should be pretty easy, and much less expensive when you do it yourself.

aside from the tranny, its doesnt look like there is anything there that would be too difficult to complete.

Oh, don't get me wrong celsdogg, i am aware of the ease of some of those repairs, just look at it this way, it's a $40k car (when new), it's been dealer maintained, less than 100k mi on the clock, yet its got ALL those repairs that are needed. I've been averaging 15,600 mi/yr. That's not really beyond average, so I'm just a bit annoyed at how delicate this piece is. My previous car (sold at 155k mi) never had so many things go wrong so easily yet this one hasn't even reached 100k mi and the transmission... com'on?!

Dough, I hear your frustrations (read the rants) and am starting to question that it's been formerly "dealer maintaintained" for a couple of reasons:
#1) Dealers - warranty previous repairs and are USUALLY pretty good at spotting possible future problems
#2) Maybe yours IS the exception - there are ALOT of BMWs that run well into the 100k, 200k mileage ranges without 1/4 probs you're having.

I will agree w/you that the costs are up there, but I question that "dealer mintained" you keep reffering to. I think you have some receipts & stamps, but what's to say that previous owner passed on dealer recommendations to fix things?

c1apton, the print out I got from the seller was all repairs done before the factory warranty expired. Which was at 50k mi. I bought the car at 51,xxx mi. So everything after the factory waranty is my own doing, which is roughy another 50k mi. Only thing though, all of those repairs are in coded form. So what exactly was done, I do not know. I could post up a pdf of it later on...

Dough - I understand that, but who's to say that previous owner did all recommended maintenance & repairs when required? Things like flushes, brakes, etc - wear items - they're given the option or told at time of visit but they're not considered warranty. When I worked for BMW, there were tons of customers who only did what was FREE. or required to keep warranty in force. I had many a customer told of waterpumps seeping and they refused only later to be towed in with overheated blocks/fried heads etc - bitching "isn't that a warranty item?" Dough, I think you're a victim of a bad previous owner.
As the techs use to say - "Stupidity is not covered under warranty"

Well, here is what was done previously... sorry for my extreme delay.

It's a pdf from a scan from a faxed copy of what the dealer had in their computers.

The way it was explained to me, the dealer maintenance is falling short, this is intentional. Rather than provide full warranty service at dealer cost, they simply don't require the proper maintenance. And by the time you find out, the warranty has expired.

Now that is how it was explained to me. I don't know how much is fact and how much is opinion. Either way I feel for you. I'm doing 2300 on my wife's car now.

Dough, there's an awful lot of gaps in there for maintenance items. If I was you I'd be shopping another vehicle - that one just "wreaks" of neglect- next one BMW or not - get/see actual receipts for ALL work/maintenance done. (Sad it has gotten to be this way but "twisting" the truth or neglecting to mention things is getting really bad in car sales - new & used)

Just so we're clear, that car that wreaks.... is my car.

I've been looking for newer vehicles. Right now, I'm looking into the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier.

yea I know - after looking at the 2 pages of dealer stuff - that's a fraction of things that should've taken place. Those pages hardly reflect oil services at regular intervals, yet INSP 1 & INSP IIs. I don't see the annual flushes - trans, diff & brake , there's one coolant flush and a ton of little campaign issues. (I have a friend in BMW NA in Atlanta running a complete dealer inquiry on your VIN and he's seeing alot of holes there beyond what you provided up to the 29k mark)
