New laptop for college

ok have two questions.

1. I have a Dell Inspiron 5160. How much do these sell for? Im selling it to my dad, and don't know how much to ask.

2. I need a new laptop for college. I am not much into computers, what brands make a good laptop? Where are good places to look? It also MUST have...
-500mb-1gb ram
-at least 80gb HD
-pretty decent video card
-all MS office features

Notebooks are hard to save with Linux, please just get an Apple Powerbook, Macbooks are nice but Motorola G4 Powerbooks are more reliable IMO

I know apple is better, but I'm afraid of not being able to work with my peers.

^^^ in what way are you trying to work with them? working with most types of documents, it is very easy to go from one platform to the other.

my next laptop is going to be a mac. i have had good luck with toshiba. i also like asus laptops; they always seem to have really good 3d video cards in them.

well you can get laptops for about 800, and new mac books for about a grand. but you get what you pay for imho. and in some cases you pay for a name instead of features, while in other machines you pay for features instead of a logo. . .

how much you looking to spend?

That's where I need an answer to question 1. How much should I ask for my current laptop.

also, where are good places to find laptops at good prices, aside from eBay?

I'd probably sell the laptop for about 350 - 400.

One question:

Are you going to be carrying around the laptop to your classes or are you primarily going to be leaving it on your desk?

For me, weight was a huge factor in my quest for a laptop. I carry around my laptop to all my classes, to the library and to work and I didn't want to be lugging around a 8lb laptop!

I have a customized hp dv1000 and I love it. It runs on a Pentium M chip (and unless you're going to be running high res games then I suggest a Pentium M--it works the same as a Pentium 4). I have an 80gb hard drive and 1gb of memory which can be expanded to 1gb should I choose to do so. DVD burner, 64mb video card and all the MS office crap. The battery also lasts for over 4 hours which is a big plus. At HP.com, you can sign up for an academic discount (10%) which helps some. I ended up paying a little under $1000 but it's worth it. I haven't had a problem with my laptop at all.

I also have an apple (picked up the macbook pro) which I use for my photography. I love the software and how userfriendly it is BUT it tends to overheat and it's actually somewhat heavy. Unless you get the powerbook (as opposed to the ibook--but it is also significantly more expensive), I'd get a windows based machine.

Basically:

Check out hp.com. Don't get an apple unless you're into graphic intense things. Ask yourself if you weight is a factor because you're going to be paying more for a lightweight laptop with the features you want. Also, if you're going to be leaving it on your desk for most of the time, think about getting a desktop because you can get so much more hardware for the same amount of money you'll be spending on a laptop.

Dell can't be beat for the price if you're dead set on windows. That's what dell is all about buying parts in such huge quantities that nobody can sell the finished project for less than they can.

Take the XPS. sure you could build a better one for more, but you couldn't build a comparable laptop for less than they can.
