might be looking for a laptop

So for work I might have to go buy myself a laptop on the company's dollar. I think I am going to be limited to about $1100 and i'm looking for advise for the best thing I can get for that ammount. I would get a mac but since I think it will turn into a company compter and we need to run windows on it so I think thats out.

the other thing is i need to be able to get it at a store (compusa, bestbuy, etc.) due to time constraints (i'm going to Hong Kong next wednesday and need it by then and probably wont be told to get one until Friday at the earliest.

I would like something thats got a good processor and isn't too big, fire away with your suggestions.

i'm thinking intel macbook FTW. work can have its windows and you can have OS X for all the "real world stuff (as the commercials say)" at home.

$1,099 for mac book intel core duo

Intel Macbooks may be the shit, but a bad idea. If Nick's company will even let him get one, their IT dept will most likely not support it; worse, they probably won't know how. Most IT dept's think it's a waste of time training for Macs. And compatibility issues have been greatly reduced in recent years, but there are still some roadblocks, especially if the company is still using antiquated equipment, network protocols, and/or application-specific file issues. He'd be on his own with stuff like that.

IMO if you have to go to a brick & mortar store to buy one, Toshiba will be your best bang for the buck. Make sure you get insurance or the extended warranty- always a good bet with laptops . . if it breaks sometime down the road, it'll more than likely be replaced with a newer, faster model

^^^ totally. i took my toshiba laptop thru baghdad and its still kickin ass 2 years after i got it. its what im posting with right now.

toshiba's warrenty and service are excellent as well. if you ever have a problem with one of their notebooks, give them a call and send it to the notebook depot, dont go to one of their authorized service stations.

definatly snag a mobile processor and at least 512mb of ram (1GB if you can) and you should be good for a long while. a definate speed boost comes from a hard drive with an 8MB cache, however most notebooks today only come with HDD's with a 2mb cache.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't really have to worry about an IT department or anything as I work for a very small company and it won't be hooking up to a network at work (onsite with ford in dearborn) or anything. It may be a bonus type of thing for my internship this summer (meaning I keep it) and if so I'm going to really go for the macbook if they will let me.

If I can't do the mac I will check out the toshiba since you guys hold it in such high regards.
