I want a Digital Camera

Okay Gang,

I am ready for a new digital camera. Mind you, I have little to no experience with photography.

I would like suggestions, webpages and resources. For discussion sake, money is no object, but I don't want a camera that is too difficult to use.

What resolution would you like? What are your purposes for the camera? i.e. action shots, stills, etc... Do you have a preferred media format or will you be replacing all of your media as well? Is size an issue? Do you need the ability to change lenses(I doubt this one because you have little experience)

I would like to take macro shots, stills, and moving pics. Removable lenses, I can use if necessary. Size is not an issue. I am looking at the Canon Rebel 350 currently, but I am not set on anything yet.

JMS are you an avid photographer?

I hear the rebel is good. Mind you im an ameture(spell?). We got an Olympus E300 Evolt. Its an 8.0 megapixel SLR i believe. Takes amazing pics if you put a little bit of time into it.

My Pentax Optio 3.2 takes rediculously good macros, and the later model is 4 or better MP

I have a Canon Rebel that’s 2 years old right now and I'm very happy with it but I'm hoping to upgrade to a Canon 20D. If you want to take macro, stills and moving pics of high quality your going to need a SLR with a couple of lens. I've always used Canon products since I started taking pictures avidly a number of years ago and I'm happy with the quality of their products. Unfortunately lenses are expensive and if you’re going to buy one buy a good one. A high quality one will last you a long time. If you’re looking to get into artistic photography or as a hobby I would recommend the Digital Rebel XT but for just every once in a while picture taking maybe a PowerShot S3 IS ($499) or a COOLPIX P2 ($199).

Trust me, Nikon is where it's at. I've got two D70's, which is a good entry level SLR. It shoots at around 6.2 MP, but it'll shoot about as fast as you can push the shutter. none of the annoying delay that you get with point-and-shoot models. I also have a 14-MP Nikon D2X, which is about 3 grand and is more of a professional camera. Also, if you get an SLR, don't scrimp on lenses. They are just as, if not more, important than the actual camera body itself.

Canon's are what our family mostly owns. Tamron lenses are good, they are cheaper than some other companies.
