Gauge clusters on e36s are a sticky problem with no single solution. Somewhere on the Pelican forum there is a discussion by one of the moderators that mentions several connections to the cluster that can cause cluster problems. I looked just now and did not find it, but it is there somewhere, I think in the middle of some how-to article.

What happens when you turn on the car?

Remove the cluster and see if a connector is lose. Use a Multimeter to check for power to the cluster.
