E34 M5

I want to hear some pros and cons about this car. I don't know anything about it. I would like some opinions.

Is it a 6 cylinder? What are the HP and torque? What is the suspension like? Mods for the car?

Does anyone on this board own one?

Have a look there too.

They are a fun car to drive, however, owning a V8, and driving friends ones, you have to drive it like a sports car (high in the revs) to get the most performance and fun from it. Not an ideal daily driver. 315hp and less torque the the 540 (obviously). As a real performance car, the E28 M5 has a better power to weight ratio and is rarer.

I know what you mean about having a V8 for a daily driver. I have to rev it high for more fun, which increases the gas of course. Thanks for the links, I will check them out.

The majority of the ones shipped to the states were 3.6 - 6cyls w/310bhp with 5 or 6speeds. I've seen a couple roll through the dealers but they were few & far between (they were selling for $88k in 1993)

The s38 is an expensive engine to deal with.

Stock replacement parts are $$ if new, and also not cheap if used because of the limited availability.

That said i would love to own one one day.

I like the idea of the Euro spec E34 M5, 1995 where the Nurburgring version was standard.

In comparison, do you guys think the maintenance of my 540i as compared to the E34 M5 would be less or more? It is expensive for any repairs or maintenance on my 540i.

The E34 M5 has some special needs - namely valve adjustments every 30k. Parts are also up there $$$ especially clutch, fuel management stuff & not stocked at many places.

I am assuming that there are not many aftermarket mods for this car? Is the dealership the only place to pick up parts?

No dealer isn't only place for parts, Bav and a bunch of others have goodies & supplies, but the selections are "thinner".(and co$tlier)

No, you can get Alpina, Schnitzer & Hartge bits for these cars. But they are even more expensive than the OEM parts (of course). Plenty of parts for LHD cars.

As far as costs go, I think it would be comparable to running my car. It is one of 70 built and has the full M5 suspension package (EDC shocks are NOT cheap to replace!) It is awesome though. The torque in the M60 makes it hard to launch without toasting the clutch, the dual-mass flywheel and hydraulics leave next to no pedal feel.

Dial in 3000 rpm and drop the clutch is the best way to launch my car. You can only do about 3 starts (in close succession) before it begins to heat up and slip. However, doing the drags, it gets enough rest. On the clutch front, don't lend it to someone who isn't going to look after it. The clutch is fine for the torque of the V8, assuming you don't ride it.

I'm not sure about your 540, but with the ASC+T fitted, I can (and do) loan my car to anyone to drive, without being concerned about them wrapping it around a pole (if they manage, they deserve it). An M5 is not such a forgiving car.

Anytime, I have a service and it costs me less than a Grand, I'm happy. An well looked after M5 will hold it's value.

Thanks for the info. How hard is it to find a 95 M5 in your neck of the woods? What kind of cost for one, any ideas? I think in the US, it is around 30K for one.

A lot less here. A mate sold a very nice E34 M5 for $25,000 NZD ($18,000USD). RHD obviously. You could look at the BMW club site in the UK (google it), they have quite a good for sale section. I was looking at buying an E30 320iS (Italian Spec S14 motor) from over there.

What about shipping costs? I would imagine shipping from the UK or Australia might be costly, plus the U.S. government would probable stick it to me with import taxes and such. Do you think it would be more or less in Australia as compared to the UK?

Australia has a Luxury car tax and quite strict importation laws, so BMW's cost alot over there. As my car was designed for the Australian market and imported here to NZ, I could send it back there and get another $10,000 for it.

The cost of hiring a container and shipping a car is not that great (a few thousand dollars). I have no idea about the import laws for you. We have absolutely no trouble getting you cars in here (or anyone elses), only the LHD causes us problems.

The reason I suggested the UK site was that they have a number of LHD cars. They are generally worth less in the UK than Europe (for obvious reasons). If a RHD car is what you are looking for, then you should import a BMW directly from Japan. Have a look at www.trademe.co.nz for an idea of our prices. You can get a standard 1993 540i for less than $15,000NZD here ($10,350USD).
