I would never take my car to the dealership. They are a huge ripoff. You can buy the Peake Research Diagnostic tool for around $150 and it will tell you the codes that are stored in the computer. Definitley worth it for the DIYer.

www.peakeresearch.com

Their are several retailers that carry them including ECS Tuning, Pelican Parts

Rosesette, assuming yours is a US spec car, this link may help point at the problem:- http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tech...de_Reading.htm . If the on-board diagnostics are not working, you need to have hubby check the fuses and relays using the BMW Electrical Troubleshooting Manual, which he can download free from here http://www.wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm and if still no joy, check the DME (Digital Motor Electronics or ECU) using this link:- http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/tech...DME-Repair.htm .

When he wants to set up for under $150 to perform his own dealer-level diagnostics, point him here http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...prune=30&f=233 and if he still needs more BMW info, point him here:- http://www.repairdynamics.com/html/bmw_resources.html .

Yea,dealerships! Hub worked in a few, seen plenty!!
I checked out that diagnostic tool! Thanks!! I found the same one on E Bay sold through the Bim zone? Free ship, case manual and warrenty for 139.00. Looks like the 20 pin does not need a adapter? Looks like this may help?

Thanks Again!! Rosesette

Bimmerzone is a decent company. Never ordered through them though.

We are seriously thinking about getting that Peake diagnostic tool!
We just cannot get the onboard to come alive!! The info in the B manual to get it to work will not activate it!
Although hub checked out the wireing manual, has a few things to do to maybe activate the onboard diagnostic. Just finding the time!

If the OBC method does t work the OBD scanner should. As long as the port has power it is suppose to function.

I have both Peake Tools, which are well made, compact and reliable but the two combined will only access the DME (Engine Control) and SRS (Airbag) modules - they will not access other critical modules like the ZKE (Central Body), ABS etc.,

I also have Carsoft, which accesses more modules (but not all) and can be set up on a laptop with free software and a $59 interface and cables.

Apart from Carsoft and the Peake Tools, I have INPA and DIS (software can also be obtained free), which give dealer-level diagnostic ability and can be used with a top of the line interface on a laptop for around $150 (the 2 Peake tools cost me nearly $300).
INPA and DIS can also access every module in your car.

The only reason I can see for going with the Peake Tools is that they are self-contained (i.e. do not need to rely on software running on a PC or laptop). As far as functionality goes, they are fine but limited - you can get far better value for your diagnostic buck.

If the DME is dead, it doesn't matter whether there is power to the diagnostic port or not, no fault codes will be generated.

Apart from the above diagnostic tools, I also own an Autel Maxidiag and an EQUUS Scan tool, but for BMWs, I would choose the laptop based systems any time.

Hub called Peake about the diagnostic tool, the rep said it will not work if no check engine light is blinking due to the OBS not working correctly when going through the procedure steps in the manual.

It is a big puzzle, hopefully we will solve,we have spark, injection pulse and spark, problem when trying to start the plugs get flooded!

Hub has not had a lot of time to fool with it but we will keep on!

Thanks for all that info on diagnostic tools,we have a puzzle here. Hub tested the port, shows power. Maybe the DME???Although we have spark, injection pulse and it cranks, just the plugs(all) Get fouled.

Thanks!! Rosesette

Could be. Too much fuel is getting into the engine. Do you have the green injectors or the pink ones?

I ask because the M50 motor had green injectors and the M52 had pink injectors. Their rated differ etly with the pink ones being 24 lbs and the green being 21. I thought maybe a PO had swapped in the pink ones not knowing and that could be causing it.

Hub got ur running!! From the git go he suspected bad fuel! He drained what fuel that was in the rails, showed little minute balls of crud! Pulled the filter too(fuel). Did a few other things??Cranked her up and it started.
A new fuel filter, some boost in the can for the bad fuel and hopefully that will take care of it!

I sure want to Thank You All!! For being so helpfull with all the info, very interesting to me! I am into the live 4 legged horse power! (race horses!) Should any of you need insight I would be more than happy to help!

Learned a lot! I will still tune in!!

Thank You!! Rosesette
