Welcome to united Bimmer!

If you have to replace your shocks/struts I would recommend Koni's as you previously mentioned. I have them in my car and I really like them. The Koni yellows have adjustable dampening for ride comfort. I purchased the Koni sport kit which includes lowering springs as well. If your on a budget then you can purchase just the shocks as they work with the stock springs. Which is advantageous if you don't wanna lower the car. If you do wanna lower the car then the springs provide about a 1.5" drop which actually looks really good. Specially if you run 17" rims.

You might find someone who has recently replaced his shocks and now wants to change them again to track the car, but I would suggest against putting old shocks on. Most of us wait way too long to replace our shocks, so you would not be gaining much.

I have been a fan of Koni shocks since the first set I bought in 1972, but on a 13-year-old commuter car, I would go with Sachs, which a a bit cheaper and are OEM.

You are sure that the problem is the suspension? The convertible has a vibration dampener in the trunk. Are you sure that someone did not disable that so they could put in a cheaper battery?

To limit your costs, another option would be to buy new Monroe shocks - $40 ea for rear, $90ea for front on RockAuto. I've not tried them and they are clearly not OEM, but should be better than your old ones.

I have never seen one myself, but I know that the e36 convertible uses the battery as the mass on a vibration dampener mechanism. You have to buy a battery that will tolerate being shaken vigorously. I have read posts through the years from convertible owners complaining that the replacement batteries were hard to find and very expensive, and asking what would happen if they bought off-the-shelf batteries.
