BMW e32 changing late from 2nd to 3rd gear!

Hi I own a 1991 model E32 BMW 735iL and have had the car for more than 8 years. For a few months now the car seems to be getting stuck in 2nd gear until 3000rpm where it would then change gear into 3rd, where as it would normally change at 2000rpm in eceonomy mode. At first it did this problem intermittently and then did it more and more. I took it to a mechanic and they found a fault code in the transmission computer and erased it. The car worked perfectly for a day and then it started doing it again all the time. Afterwards the transmission failed due to restriction of oil to the clutches because of a blocked filter in the valve body where the solenoids are. I had the transmission rebuilt replacing all the clutches, seals, gaskets etc. But the problem is still there after the transmission was rebuilt so I wouldn't say it's from the transmission unless it's the solenoids playing up or a sensor of some sort. I changed the airflow meter from a 1989 model BMW 730i and it did do a slight difference. Now when you turn the car on from the temperature being at cold, it seems to change gears at about the right time. It would slightly go over abit from 2nd to 3rd gear and then quickly change and work fine only until the car's temperature is at normal. Once the temperature hits normal the rpm's start playing up again and there's nothing I can do to change that. The rpm's seem to go up and back down in a very erratic way and I suspect it may be some sensor or relay. Anyone have any ideas or anything cause it is driving me insane. Thank you

I do hate to say it, but that right their is an example that BMW transmission fluids are not "lifetime". Life of the transmission? Yes. The blocked filter is why people advocate transmission fluid changes from anywhere between 50 and 100,000 km.

I am surprised your still experiencing this problem after having the transmission rebuilt. Is the OBD still throwing any codes?

Thanks for the quick response Yeah i don't believe in not changing the ATF and ATF Filter for automatic transmissions as i think they should be serviced regularly. I did change the Filter and the ATF when put the transmission back together. I used ATF Dextron 3.

I don't believe this issue is from the transmission itself mechanically. It could be from a sensor or solenoid withing the valve body but i'm not sure. Unless it's some other sensor or something else entirely. i have no idea.

The computer does not seem to be giving any codes now so i don't know where to start...

Hey RV,

Great description of the problem. I think that we either have a voltage problem or a blockage somewhere. Unfortunately I think the problem may be very difficult to fix. Would like to know if you have discovered the culprit!

I have the same problem and have tried many things. It is intermittent which
baffles all.

1. I have changed the auto filter twice, ATF three times.

2. cleaned the selector switch which when clean solved it but the problem came back.

3. swapped out the SEM switch, it was OK

4. gave the battery a recondition charge with the Ctek and some improvement but the problem still returns.

driving me crazy as when it shifts it can be perfect and I think the problem is over but then it appears again.

Hi, mate yeah it drives you crazy cause you don't know what it is. It seemed to get worse and worse over time and eventually it led to strong friction when I drove it. If I continued driving like that, it would have burnt the clutches yet again. I pulled out the valve body and pulled it apart and cleaned all the valves and all using Kerosene. Make sure you air hose the solenoids in case there is dirt in them. After cleaning the valves and valve body in kerosene make sure you air hose everything to dry them up and use ATF oil to put the valves back and all. Also it would be helpful to flush out the pipes which go from the transmission to the radiator. I used a pump and kerosene a couple times and then with ATF oil in the last go. Also changed the filter and oil. It seemed to help quite significantly but maybe once in a drive it might come up but not to often as previously. This might be because there might still be some dirt in the oil in the torque converter. I didn't realize that there would have still been some dirt in the two pipes going from the transmission to the radiator which is probably why it worked fine on the first test drive from rebuilding the transmission and then started playing up again because dirt came back to it. Alao i think it makes sense that once you have left the car off for many hours and are going to drive it would work fine for a bit and start playing up after 10 minutes or so is because the oil sits in the pan for hours and hours and once you turn it on and it starts circulating, the dirt eventually comes stuck again causing this issue. This might not be 100% the problem, but I can say cleaning the dirt helps significantly. I think blockage is the problem. Give it a try and let us know how it goes

I tend to agree exactly what you have said. I am in "blockage" mode at present and I am not enjoying it at all! Though it is better than TRANS PROG.

I think the entire flushing and valve body cleanse is my next step!

Let me know if you have any dramas with your 735iL as my car has had just
about everything that can go astray happen.....still love it though

Yeah, I'd highly recommend a good clean to the valve body and those two pipes going from the transmission to radiator. It's definently worth doing. It's funny how dirt can affect a valve body so much that you would have no clue where to look. What model/year is your BMW? Let us know how it goes with your car!

Yeah, I've done a heap of work already on mine. Head gasket, water pump, radiator, transmission rebuild and goes on. But I still love the car, a great pleasure to drive when it goes properly

I am now in the automatic transmission specialist getting the problem fixed, fingers crossed. I love it when you take a car in and it is NOT playing up!

Yep I've been through that, when you want to the car to show you that's it's playing up and it doesn't it makes you look like a crazy person. Not too sure if your car's transmission comes with check balls in the valve body but make sure to ask the specialists to make sure the sizes are all correct and in the right spot. Last time I took my valve body out I noticed one of the check balls had gone missing and had ended up in the wrong place which may have also been part of the reason why I was having issues. This check ball is supposed to sit directly next to another one and the other one was slightly bigger and was not traveling through the hole on the board while the other was. A specialist told me sometimes check balls do wear out. So it could also be part effect. It good to make sure it's all right. Transmission rebuilders and probably specialists should have all the books and specifications for them let us know how it all goes
