help plz. Comp. is SLOW

hey guys.

my computer is rediculous.

it is a newer dell inspiron 5160 notebook.

has a 3.5 ghz processor with about 512mb. of ram, etc etc.

And it is SLOW. when I open it up and it starts up, it takes about 5-10 minutes. when I want to open internet explorer, thats another minute or two.

I have checked and double checked for all viruses, worms, trojans, spy-ware, etc. and I am clean.

What the heck is going on? It doesn't like having many folders or programs open at once which points me in the direction of a lack of memory. when I hit ctrl+alt+delete and go performance it tells me that my PF usage is up to 573 mb. It sounds like my computer lacks memory, how can this be?

any other ideas? thanks guys.

Maybe...

You have too many files or whatnot and that's what's slowing it down.

Have you considered compressing your files?

Get Ad-aware, Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanic from downloads.com ... I just did yesterday, and I cleaned off so much crap that it literally runs 3 times faster.

First off, you probably know that your video card shares the same memory, so you won't ever have the full 512MB available. When you hit ctrl-alt-del, go to the Processes tab to see what is actually running, and what's wierd in there that shouldn't be there, or what processes you could do without running all the time. Use the Run command to start "services.msc", and see what unnecessary shit you can disable. BlackViper can help explain what the different services do. Torque's advice is great too. And check your power management settings to see if you have them set to run the CPU at reduced speed; many laptops do this by default. Finally, defrag your hard drive, and also test your memory to make sure you're not running a bad stick. Hope this helps.

When in doubt, defrag HD to see if it fixes.
