Engine Hot and Cold

Hi guys, newbie here.

My 2001 530i M Sport has just started to show me a worrying trend.

The temperature gauge always sits right in the middle of the range.

However yesterday it began to shoot up into the red zone for a second or two and then go back to normal. It happened 3 times yesterday and I can't work out why. It doesn't stay up there long, but I want to get it sorted ASAP.

Any thoughts?

KJ
