stromung sounds good but...

I finally got the four bolts (new) put back in the exhaust. I started her up and she purrs nice, except for this inherent rattle. it makes the thing sound ricey. Now, when moving, she sounds really good, but at a stand still, she rattles a little..

any ideas on what it could be? The rattle is in the back, not the front towards the four bolts, so I don't think anything is loose there...

help is much appreciated...

Is the exhaust brand new? Try driving the car some and see if it changes the resonance. Exhausts need to be broken in a bit.

i dont think breaking it in will remove the rattle. check to make sure nothing is loose. maybe there is something broken inside the pipes

not hitting anything haile. its a metal on metal rattle.

I forgot about the doughnut. Yes, there was one metal doughnut I did put back in but it was from the old setup (the new one didn't come with it). Should I buy a replacement?

The donut is about $9 at your local dealership.

You are supposed to replace both gasket rings when you install an exhaust. They are a one time use product. Turner Motorsport sells an entire exhaust installation kit for the e36, but it is 100.00. At least you can use it as a reference...e36 kit is on this page

It may not fix your problem, but it is a good place to start. Also while you're under the car, you could check to make sure your cat converter hangers and exhaust hangers are in good shape, and secure.

Did you keep the stock heat shields when you replaced?

PS, I want a video.

zerrus, you want video of what? I posted a DIY on this project. It got moved to that section of this board.

eurostyle - thanks. There was nothing that came with my new exhaust. I bought a kit from Bavauto. I got one with rubber gaskets. The old exhaust was metal to metal (no rubber) so I thought it would be okay. But I think the rattle is related to the catback connection and not the brackets near the bumper. The old bolts were bent, so I got new ones, but I think they were too long...

I want a video/sound clip of what the exhaust sounds like, that's one of the brands I'm thinking about.
