Problems with automatic transmission 745i 2002

Hi.
Just bought a 2002 745i on thursday and drove it home, approx 180 miles, without any problems whatsoever. The one who sold it to me said there was a fail code showing up, but he had it investigated and reset in a BMW dealer workshop and they could not find anything wrong with it. I also called this dealer and got the information confirmed. There should be no problems connected to this error-message they said.
After driving the car a few hours later, stopping engine and starting it up again and selecting reverse gear problems occured. The aut transmission started giving errors like "Failsafe mode", "N is only possible when engine is running", “gearbox functions impaired" and a few others. It also drove forwards when i put it in reverse and the indicator stated "R".
After stopping and starting engine a couple of times the tranny seemed ok. but it still comes back with same issues. It does not act up when starting with cold engine, but second time around it may act up if "R" is chosen instead of "D". seems like it faults more often if i put it in "R" before "D"
Went to a transmission specialist yesterday and got fault codes from car. He also tried to drive it without success. It did not slip when It went into gear and he held it on the brakes while increasing rpm’s. no problem in Drive og Reverse.
Took it for a spin without any problems.
The problem some times also turns up when stopping the for traffic when running on idle speed.
The idle speed with warm engine is about 450-500 rpm, and for me that seems a bit low. With cold engine the idle is about 700 rpm..
Does anyone in here have a clue about what the problem might be?

Best regards,

Chris

This is an electronic transmission. If you're having problems now on an itermittent basis, I can guarantee it will only get worse. My advice is, start saving money for a new tranny or torque converter, or both. you might have some luck in changing out the modules in the tranny, but, I wouldn't hold my breath. BMW still refuses to acknowledge that the 7 series transmissions are faulty in design. Luck
