'96 328is heater blower motor died

The heater blower on my daughter's 328is stopped working. Did some searching and found that the final stage resistor is a common fault so I replaced it tonight and...nothing. Fan still does not work. Checked fuses and all related fuses are good. This car has the digital climate control. Apparently the fan gradually died off. It did not stop working all of a sudden. She describes driving with the A/C on and no air being blown and then the blower all of sudden kicking in without warning. Is this a bad blower motor? If so, does anyone know where I could find DIY instructions? How do you access this thing? Hopefully this is not a dismantle the entire dash project. Thanks for any help.

If the car has digital climate control, it SHOULD communicate w/the PCM and you MIGHT be able to get a DTC code that'll point you in the right direction

I would think that a code might appear if it was a problem with the digital control itself. Does the fact that the car is not throwing any codes or showing a CEL mean that it really is a burned out blower motor and not some other more complex component? I could not find anything related to the A/C or heater in the BMW code listings available online.

A check of the Bentley manual shows that it doesn't appear to be all that hard a job, basically getting at the thing under the plenum under the windshield. If youi don't have one of these manuals, get one (or see if by chance your library has one), it lays out the procedure quite nicely.

To answer your previous question, yes. The car will ONLY throw a code if it's a monitored system (like the digital control) and even then will only throw a code if it's something the computer recognizes as a fault on the control side of the circuit. Aka the relay coil circuit, if the relay switch side goes bad the computer will never know unless it has a way to monitor the output. Climate control nowadays is a little different than it was 13 years ago, way more computer junk. You could try to test the fan by unplugging it and running some jumper wires to it, if it works you got other problems, if it doesn't then your already halfway in to fixing it.
