4 door defeats the purpose of trying to save weight by making it a hatchback. It's supposted to be a big-engine-in-a-little-car design, but they made it 4 door.
The reason it is a 4 door hatchback is that it's designed for the European market (hence it's not available in the US).
Hatchback or 4 doors is nothing do do with weight - more the fact that our roads over here are very congested and parking comes at a premium, hence the need for smaller cars - Hatchbacks often reduce the overall length of a car but still offer good luggage space - but we often still require the practicality offered by having 4 doors (if we often carry rear seat passengers why should they constantly squeeze through the front doors???), hence the 4 door hatchback is a very popular design in European cars and has been for decades.
Personally I think it looks fantastic - strange as I'm not a fan of the 1 series in general.
